So after a brief introduction from me back in April, got loads of info from you guys, and confronted my surgeon over why I was having surgery and not trying meds first.

My inflammation was too bad to be fixed by meds, scarring etc, so my mind was put at ease then that surgery was the best option.

Had the op' 15th May. Woke up from it feeling marvelous...thank you epidural!
Ended up having open surgery as the mass of inflammation was huge!
Was in hospital for 6 days, hadnt done a poop, but was passing wind and eating normally so was allowed home. First poop wasnt much fun, quite constipated so cheated and had Senacot, a stool softener. After that everything was very normal, just 2 regular poops a day!

The first week or so at home was a struggle. Had to have everything at waist height, too painful to bend or stretch for things....pain killers helped a lot that first week!

But as the weeks passed by, stopped taking pain killers, and was feeling better and better.....forgot how it was to feel 'well', had been in such pain for months before the op, and now even though still recovering from a major op' I feel sooooo good!

Have my first appointment was the gastro doc this Monday (I kinda had a back to front way of discovering Crohns!) I guess he'll book me in for some tests to see if Crohns is hiding anywhere else, or see if Im in remission....finger crossed!!!!

Also wondering if Ill be put on any meds as at the moment Im totally symptom free. Had a blood test last week and everything was looking back to normal (was very anemic and showing lots of infection pre op) GP said Vit D was a little low so will address this this the gastro doc Monday.

 Glad you are feeling almost like a normal person! Sounds like the op was very successful. I wouldnt be surprised if they put you on a maintenence med either.

May you continue to feel great!

Hello Loshy

I had an op a year ago at St.Thomas' in Westminster. Was put on strong antibiotics for the 3 months following the op but since then have only been taking Loperamide to slow my digestive system down, nothing specifically for Crohn's.

Had a colonoscopy just before Christmas - no sign of Crohns! Had an MRI scan in April and it suggested inflammation has started up again but I'm not getting the pain. Had another colonoscopy last week and again no sign of Crohns so I'm a little confused. Have now provided a sample for a calprotectin test. Will get the results in a couple of weeks time when I see my consultant. All very confusing.

Fingers crossed that you are in remission. As you say, it's easy to forget what feeling well is like.

Regards

Thanks guys :)

Im trying not to get too relaxed, as my GP kindly told me, Crohns can re-appear at any time, anywhere, from your mouth to your butt.

So if taking a maintenance med is for the best so be it, but Im also focusing on a healthy diet and regular exercise.....and gonna stick to it!

Nigel, sounds like your crohns is being real sneaky, coming and going! Hoping you get the answers your after from these recent tests

xx
