I have been on 6MP for the better part of the time after diagnosis. I was warned about alcohol and the little sticker on the bottle reminds me every morning as well not to consume alcohol. I understand how 6MP works as well as how alcohol metabolizes, however, those of you also on 6MP do you drink/how often? Also, have any of you had any adverse issues? I am not looking to get wasted I just miss having a Shiner Bock here and there ;) Basically, I just need some real world experience/advice from you guys and gals.

I have a beer or two once a week to satisfy my craving...

My label did not say to avoid alcohol from what I remember off of the top of my head, and my GI said it's OK as long as you are responsible and drink lightly/in moderation.

Since I am newer to 6MP, I have admittedly slipped up being caught up in the excitement of celebration (friend's proposal/birthday) gone overboard twice since on this med....and I felt like complete CRAP the next day. Moreso than before I would take the med. I just felt disgusting and worn down, unable to move about and eat and leave the sofa much. **I must note that these slipup moments involved shots....I have learned now that shots aren't really my best friend anymore...

But a few beers once or twice a week has not done me any harm. My blood levels are all within range so far....I try to only drink every other week though when I can fight the urge and the occasion. That way I learn to live without the need to drink.

It sucks because I LOVE craft beers, and I am at the age where going out for drinks is the social norm.....but I am definitely more mindful about my drinking habits now. No matter what though I ALWAYS make sure to have plenty of water before, in between and after a few drinks.

Not on 6mp, but on aza (aza converts to 6mp in the body), never heard anything about not drinking alcohol at all and I have beem taking aza since 2003. I drink a beer or some wine occassionally. Hard liquor is bad for Crohn's and downing 10 beers isn't the best thing for Crohn's either.

The whole thing about aza and 6mp and alcohol has to do with the effects of aza and 6mp on the liver. Heavy constant drinking strains the liver, something which could enhance detrimental effects of aza and 6mp on the liver.

By the way, try to drink enough water ot tea etc. per day. Half a gallon (2L) per day minimum is a recommedation for everyone, by but it's especially important when taking drugs like aza and 6mp long term.

I am on 6mp and I occasionally drink a glass of wine here and there. I have also had a hard liquor drink but I generally only have one of those drinks at a time. I don't have any problems with it. I think you just need to be careful and not overdo it.
