a few questions from a newbie tmi sorry

Hello,

I got diagnosed in june after nearly a year of diahorrea, pain etc. Don't know why I left it so long really!
I am currently on my 5th week of pred and start reducing tomorrow to 3 tablets and I am also on azathioprine 50mg til next week when ill be up to 100mg.
I have been experiencing a new and unpleasant symptom and I was hoping someone could help.
I have got either skin tags or hemmoroids I think, ive not had them before. Ive got 3 'piles' which swell up every now and then. Now since friday I have been having fresh red blood on the tissue but when ive looked its not from these it appears to be inside. What do I do? Any suggestions?
So glad I can ask this on here, I know its their job but I cant bear to ask the IBD nurses about this!

Aside from this ive been really tender in the abdomen the last few days a bit like period pain but its not. Strangley this is what it all started off with and they thought I had something gyny wrong. And I ve gone back to being tired out all the time again.

Thanks for listening.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Skin tags are not uncommon and are usually left alone unless they are causing a problem. As for the fresh blood, pain and general tiredness, then I really would talk to someone about that. There could be a number of causes and it's a job for a professional to determine what the problem is and if any change to your current treatment is necessary. How long until your next scheduled appointment? If you really can't talk to the IBD Nurses, perhaps you should see your GP or talk to your Gastroenterologist's Secretary and see if they can get one of the team to speak to you or see you?

Crohn's has taken away any sense of personal embarrassment over the years and I'll now drop my trousers for anyone and discuss intimate details at great length! The Nurses and Doctors understand that people get embarrassed and are usually very sensitive to this and will do whatever they can to put you at ease.

I hope that you are feeling more comfortable soon.

Thanks for your reply. I just feel like I'm bothering them by ringing. Thats just me though probably.
My next appointment is September. I'll give it a few more days then see if it goes away. If not I'll give them a ring.

Hey Owllover,
If your symptons have increased significantly ie, bleeding and abdomen pain, then it is really worth you talking to someone about it. Just call your GI and see if they can fit you in for an appointment. It's really not worth leaving these things to the last minute, I know I did that last year and by the time I got into the doctor he took one look at me and sent me to the emergency room. I ended up in the hospital for three weeks.
It's worth listening to Mark63 too about the embarrassment thing, believe me you get over it pretty quickly when you live with this disease. In the end if you can't talk about your symptoms then your doctor won't be able to make an informed assessment and you might end up in a more difficult or dangerous position.
Best of luck :)

Hiya Owl lover
and welcome

I have these and yes they do bleed, it's usually excessive diarhea with me, then they swell up and hurt like bilio!
A good rule of thumb, if your blood is bright pillar box red in colour - this is usually from a hemmie, either internal or external
If the blood is dark reddish brown in colour - this could indicate old blood from higher up in the tract. But............
Never ignore any blood, if this isn't normal for you, then get it checked.
Us Crohnies leave our dignity on the doorstep, a small price to pay.
Docs have seen it all!
Also, sometimes when we taper down from Pred, the symptoms return, you say you're going down to 3 tablets (15mg?) after 5 weeks. Maybe Pred hasn't finished with you yet, maybe you need to stay on a higher dose for a while longer. Don't self medicate tho, talk to your doc.
Good luck

Welcome

Go get it checked my friend, they really have seen, heard and smelt it all.

I had all those fears at first but now they could examine me on the high street if they wished, wouldnt bother me in the slightest.

blood show is not normal.

best of luck with it

Thanks again for your replies. Ive been in a bit of pain again today. Still bleeding. I think it is a little tear of a hemmaroid. Going to wait til tomorrow then give them a ring. Ive got to go to the hospital for my weekly blood test on friday anyway.
Thanks

Hello,
Just an update, rang IBD nurse this morning and she asked me to go straight in. Shes given me prednisilone enemas to have for 2 weeks and I have to ring on monday to let her know if the bleeding has stopped or not. If not will book me in for a camera to check whats going on. She also advised me to stay on 4 tablets of pred for the time being and sent me for a blood test to check my CRP.
When I called I expected her to say 'it will be fine, you'll be ok' sort of thing but she took me really seriously and actually looked a lot more concerned than I am!
Glad I called now. Thanks for your help :)

Only down side is another prescription! Ive signed up for the prepayment certificate today so hopefully can claim it back and use that for the prescription for pred and calcium next week. Wish Id done it earlier now!
