A flare?

Need opinions while I'm waiting to hear back from dr. My son has had a fever and sore throat for 2 weeks now with ulcers on back of throat and ulcers in mouth too. Skin rash too. No other stomach issues. Pediatrician said virus after 1 week, strep test came back negative. After another week of same symptoms, took him back to pediatrician and they said virus again or MAYBE crohns flare up, simply because of how long it's lasted and the ulcers.

Supposed to have remicade in 2 days....waiting to see what GI wants to do.

I just don't know. Pedi said they see lots of coxsackie (sp) virus this time of year but usually doesn't last this long. His remicade is prob out of his system by now since we are due in 2 days and his levels have been very low so they were going to up the dosage this time.

Could the remicade be making it take longer to fight the virus even if there is very little in his system at this time?

Spoke to GI and he said it could be a flare and to keep remicade appt fro Friday....who knows! Just wish he would feel better. If it is a flare, it's our first, anything we can do to keep him feeling better? Ugh. 😢

My son is in a flare too, so I can sympathize. My son's symptoms differ from yours-decreased energy, sensitivity to food (no specific food, just kind of everything), and frequent urination. MTX is failing, so we are going to move to Remicade. The only things really helping my son now are getting a little extra rest, and eating bland, low fiber foods. I hope this resolves for your son soon!

We've never had just mouth ulcers with a flare, but if it is one, I hope he's feeling better after the Remicade. Do lozenges help? There is also numbing spray you can get for the throat, which I know because my daughter needed after she got her NJ tube and her throat was very irritated. Not exactly the same as ulcers, but maybe worth a shot?

Sending hugs! I'm sure others will chime in soon with their experiences.

Sorry to hear... :(

I have no experience with this but I've read other parents mentioning magic mouthwash for canker sores. I believe it's prescribed. Tagging farmwife - I'm sure she's mentioned it before.

Hope he feels better soon... :ghug:

Yup...Magic Mouth Wash!!!! We love it!
Ask your GI and if he/she doesn't know what it is, call your pharmacist.
Ask them what they call it and what formula they use to make it.
Every place is a bit different.

I forget now but ours has three meds mixed in it (I think it's a numbing agent, pain med and anti bacterial).

Thanks all. He had his remicade yesterday. He lost another pound 😓, prob because he hasn't eaten due to a mouth full of ulcers. But he did grow .25 in! So far, his fever is gone!! Hope it stays away, his rash looks much better. Ulcers are still there but I imagine they will not disappear overnight, he said his throat feels a bit better. I think it was/is a flare rather than a virus just based on the remicade-fever-rash results. I will be placing a call to GI to get that mouthwash, thank you for the advice!

Mehita, since his remicade, he's been feeling great and eating up a storm! Hoping he's gained some lbs back. Thanks for asking. 😊
