Hi my 12 yr old went to see the gi doctor on Friday to be booked in for scopes. The doc said he wants him dine and on EEN by the end of the month. We have been told it looks like crohn's as he has to many symptoms for it not to be he had mre just over a week ago.
Now we have just had a call from the hospital to say he is booked in for next wendsday on the PM list but the doctor wants him to say in that night and maybe the next. Why would this be?

Any help grateful received as I am going out of my mind wondering why.

I would just call and ask why the doctor wants your son admitted. The only thing that jumps to mind is that maybe the doctor wants to start EEN right after scopes. If you son is very malnourished, they often start EEN inpatient for a few days, so that they can monitor for something called refeeding syndrome.

Good luck with scopes, and I hope you get answers soon.

Thanks for your reply we are waiting in the nurse ringing about it so will ask her. The doctor said he wanted him to go on it for a day see if he can keep it down and it not he will put him back to sleep and put a tube down and feed him that way so maybe that's what it is then

You do not need anesthesia to place an NG tube (typically). Many kids do it themselves. My daughter did it every night and removed it every morning, so that she could get her feeds overnight, but no one had no know! It takes about 10 seconds.

But she was also admitted when we started it -- she was malnourished and we were watching for Refeeding syndrome and making sure she tolerated the feed. She was there 3 days the first time. The first night was VERY uncomfortable but after that, the second night was better and she got used to quickly.

She was later admitted for an NJ tube (which you do need sedation to place because it goes into the small bowel and not just the stomach) and by then was VERY malnourished and actually developed Refeeding syndrome. She was in the hospital for 10 days that time.

Good luck!

My son was admitted the day before his first scopes for bowel prep and kept in hospital 6 days to establish feeding through ng tube and we had to learn how to give him his Bolases and how to work pump at night x

We got a call at 2pm yesterday they have changed his dates to tomorrow so had to start perp last night. He is feeling so sick today with all the water and no food. They said they are not sure why the doctor wants to keep him in it may just be to mack sure he is OK after or to start him on the drink stuff
