About two weeks ago I had an abscess develop on my lower abdomen just above my genital area that my doctor figures was due to a recent surgery. They drained my abscess and sent me home. I went back yesterday to have them check it and it turns out that my abscess has turned into a fistula and is leaking stool from my bowel. I'm told that if it doesn't heal within the next couple of weeks that they'll be doing a resection on me. I have an elevated white blood count so they can't give me a Remicade infusion. Has anyone here had anything like this happen to them? My surgery that they think caused this was a laporscopic small bowel resection. It doesn't make sense to my why that surgery would cause a fistula.

Hi Janny,

I am really sorry, I haven't had any experience with this, but I just wanted to say that I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I had a fistula before, and they were worried that I could get a fistula at my c-section site when I had my baby, I didn't though! I'm not sure why surgery can cause them, but I know it can happen.

Janny hi and sorry to hear about this :-( The high blood count is probably a sign of inflammation and unfortunately it seems quite common to get this at the site of a previous surgery. Severe inflammation tunnels through the bowel to other organs and/ or skin (fistulizes). With an abscess, they don't like to use Remicaid while you still have infection. Have they got you on antibiotics for that?
