Abscess I&D site infection or Fistula? Advice Needed

Hi All,

I am new here, and wanted to get your opinion as to what is going on. I had a fairly large perianal abscess drained at at my local Dr's office 1 month ago.

It has been draining ever since, mostly clear to slightly red from the incision site at a slower rate as time goes by.

I would have expected it to be completely healed by now, but within the last week, pus has started to drain from the incision site and has been increasing.. This has me concerned that I may have a fistula.

I have looked as best I can for a fistula opening in my rectum, but do not see any other areas of drainage or openings. The pus is draining from the original incision site.

Based on this description, is this the way a fistula behaves, or could it be just a surgical site infection? I live in a small town, and there are no colo/rectal Dr's anywhere near where I live. Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I'm concerned you aren't seeing a gastroenterologist because an ordinary doctor is not skilled in dealing with what may be IBD. If you notice a change a month post I&D I am also concerned of a new abscess or fistula. Even if it's a commute I think its important a specialist advise you.

NGNG is right, you are best off with a colorectal surgeon or at least a gi. It could be either an infection or a fistula - best to have a specialist check it out before it gets bad.
