I have GERD and it comes and goes but I don't want to have to take Prilosec OTC every day and if I get off of it after the 2 week period it comes back.

Can there be anything to stop or reduce it besides avoiding acidic food? What does this do long term can it create a problem?

It is an insidious condition and for some can lead to a cancer , such as Barretts Esophagus..in the longer term.
Sometimes it necessary to be treated with an acid inhibitor such as tagamet or zantac,
or with a proton pump ihibitor such as Nexium, Panto prazole, omeprazole etc.
Usually a course of treatment is one to three months.
It would be up to the GI to guide you in this decision.
There is also maalox , gaviscon and other antacids but usually these are not adequate to the task.
Feel better soon
