Hello All,

I had a laparoscopic ileocolic resection last Monday, and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. I have been told to avoid the gym and any vigorous physical activity for about five more weeks (total of six weeks after surgery) to allow the fascia time to heal and avoid a hernia.

I am generally an active person, and am wondering what I can and cannot do around the house. I have avoided lifting anything heavy, but have been taking the stairs and bending or stretching for items while trying not to put any strain on my abdomen. I have also been careful when sitting or sleeping. I will need to start lifting my laptop bag soon when I get back to work, but am not sure whether that is unsafe or not.

I would appreciate any advice on what I can/can't do, as well as any signs that would indicate I am overdoing it (although I'm not sure that there would be any if it is the internal healing that I am worried about).

Thanks again for all the great responses to my other questions!

I was told to not lift anything over 20lbs for 4-5 wks. I pretty much stuck to that but a couple of times lifted too much and became sore but didn't have any complications. I didn't have any problem carrying my laptop bag which was probably close to 20lbs with everything in it.

Abdominal surgery means you have to watch stressing the abdominal wall, possibly the diaphragm as well. Walking is good; but bending, stretching, lifting.. those you want to watch out for. I was doing light yard work 4 weeks out, A-OK I did some rather heavy ditch digging 7 weeks after.. A-OK. I just did what I could til I tired, then napped or rested when the need arose. As for what to watch out for, weeping around any incisions, increased pains in the area, or sudden weakness, dizzyness, any sign indicating a sudden downturn.
