Had surgery 5 days ago, part of my small bowel removed, feeling very sick everytime I open my bowels is this normal?

When were you discharged?
What's your diet right now?

I've felt sick after surgery. Usually because my system isn't ready for what I'm eating.

That seems odd. Are you straining?
Make sure you're drinking lots to keep thingsmoving .

I'd bring it up at your follow up appt.

I've had a different part of my bowel removed but I have had this post op. I think it is just when the bowel is emptied it's an opportunity for everything in the rest of the GI tract to move which upsets things a little at the healing site. Five days is very early. Have you been prescribed anti-nausea drugs?

Agree with DJW on the incomplete emptying side...may just be sluggish due altered intake and meds post op but raise it if not. Hope the rest of your healing goes well.

Following discharge from hospital, after bowel surgery, it is normal to experience some abdominal discomfort from either the wound or windy pain from the bowel itself. This will gradually improve over several weeks. You should continue taking the pain relieving drugs, which have been prescribed for you at the hospital, until you feel comfortable. If you need further supplies or your pain is not adequately controlled or your pain is getting worse you should see your GP.

Yeah it is very early days for you. I have had many abdominal surgeries and pretty much without exception have still felt like a train wreck at day five. We all recover differently though so don't hesitate to raise it with your hospital if you're not sure. Feel better soon...

Sick as in nauseous? I felt very sick (and was sick a couple of times) the first couple of days after surgery, but it got better as soon as I managed to start eating. But my bowels were very weird for at least a week after I got out of hospital.

And I found I started feeling a lot better as soon as I stopped taking the anti-nausea drugs they gave me.
