Hello;
Have any of you ever had high liver enzyems or high Alkaline phosophate levels when blood work was done? I did blood work last week and the ALK Phos level came back at 199. Doctor then done a GTTP test and Liver functions came out normal. My GP wants to do a Bone Scan and Ultrasound of my liver I am just so worried that it is something more serious.

Hi,
Are you on any medication. Drugs like azathioprine (imuran), 6MP, methotrexate can cause your liver enzymes to be abnormal. Were your other liver levels normal ( bilirubin, gamma GT, ALT ?
Alkaline phosphatase is also produced by the bones so thats why the bone scan. It also goes up in pregnancy.

Well the contraceptive pill can cause alk phos rises, particularly if it is the combined type containing oestrogen and progesterone. Might be worth raising this with your GP.

I sure will discuss it with him, he also said that he researched the Pentasa and it did cause increased levels but wants to do the test just to make sure everything is ok. I go Thursday for the scan and Ultrasound and will maybe get results by Friday.

Thank you so much for your response!! I really appreciate it.

I've had high liver enzymes, different scans and ultrasounds, now they want to do an EUS and probably take a needle biopsy. Ugh.

At first they thought PSC, but I think that's just about been ruled out. Apparently there are several different auto-immune liver things we can get, and catching them early is the key. They've been trying to stick that thing down my throat for 3 years now, and I managed to weasel out of it. This time I think they've got me.

I had never heard of PSC I had to research to see what it was...WOW Thank God its been just about ruled out. I had stopped researching things about Crohns in the past because there are so many scary things that we can get with Crohns. Keep me posted on you further testing.
I just can't wait until tomorrow until this bone scan and ultrasound is done so i can get peace of mind and know exactly what I have. I will let y'all know as soon as I get the results.

Good luck! They're easy tests, you just lie still. ;)

The PSC is scary but I was surprised after all my reading, the NP said they can treat it. They can't cure it but they treat it, and there are people who live a long time with it. It didn't look like fun, though. None of it is.

Hi Cricket,

I'd bet money your elevated alkaline phosphatase levels are due to vitamin D deficiency (make sure your doctor tests your levels).

Give this a read (the general term for rickets in adults is Osteomalacia) and then this.

Test results are in

Finally got the test results in....The bone scan showed Arthritis in my shoulders, hip and knees. No bone disorder :dance:Thank Goodness!!
The ultrasound of my liver/abdomen showed a large galstone which I have to make an appointment with my GI to see what to do about that. Also, showed my liver and spleen mildly enlarged. And my GP doctor says he stresses "mildly enlarged", He is telling me that its probally due to the inflamation from the Crohn's and the gallstone plus the medication I am on.

I am just so releived that it is nothing serious!! I will also ask my GI doctor to check my Vitamin D levels to make sure they are not to low.

Thanks for wishing me well. And I hope you are all doing good!!!

I'm glad you got your results back already! It is scary to think "what freaking else is wrong with me!" Anyway, are you having really bad RUQ pain if you have a big stone? I had gallstones and they were almost unbearable!!

That is the weird thing I have pain from time to time but blamed it on my Crohns...Nausea every once in a while. I will be sitching GI docs this week hopefully. I am just not satifisfied with the one I have , everytime I ask a question about Crohns he says I worry to much and we will cross that bridge when we get there.
