Grace's cellulitis infection is back around her g-tube.:voodoo: She's starting her second round of antibiotics.

We've been told if the infection is not gone by Monday they'll cancel her scopes.:(

So what can happen if an infection (any kind and or any where in the body) is present and you under go anesthesia???

Thanks for the replies!

I could not find any specific complications on an infection that were caused by anesthesia. I think it may be more of a precaution.

It could be the infection could contaminate equipment in use , making conditions unsafe for other patients.

Trisha,
Cross contamination to other patients really should not be an issue as everything is super sterilized in the OR.(though nothing is 100%) Plus they would bandage the affected area to prevent cross contamination on the patient herself. I think the main reason is when someone is compromised in any manor that if it is not an emergent procedure you try to avoid introducing any outside factors that would increase the chances of anything happening.

Yes, that's what I said. Why not bandage it?

If she had a lunge infection, then I could see the danger to her life.

Can the anesthesia alone change how the body fights the infection.
Is there a chance of it spreading more afterwards????

Sorry I just read that closer. Makes sence.

Her GP will see her the day before scopes to pass or fail her.

:eek2:I can't picture going through a cleanout and not doing the scopes.:voodoo:

There is documented evidence on this subject of cross contamination reported by
APSF.. Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.
This article was too lengthy to post here but can be found using Google.
Hope this is helpful to this very sad situation.Poor child to have so much suffering.
My heart goes out to her and her parents.
Feel better soon.

Wow, that would be frustrating starting the clear out and then not having scopes! I wouldn't have thought the anaesthetic would make any difference to the infection, the only thing I have ever heard of is not having it if you have a cough as there is a risk you could cough up the breathing tube.
However, we have to bow to the doctors on these things, they are probably just being super careful. Hope the scopes go ahead!

Trisha,
Can you post the link to that article? I could not find the one you are talking about. I did find some talking about blood borne pathogens and respiratory infections but that was all I could find.

Hi Kimmidwife
The papers come from the library of congress and the reference is
www.ncbi.nim.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3252669/pdf/KHI-06-14.pdf
If you have a problem accessing this I could pm you with the whole article.
It is very lengthy and too large to post on the forum.
A lot of work has been done by the APSF---Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.
Hopefully Grace's cellulitis will heal and the scopes will go ahead.

When surgery is elective they will generally postpone unless the condition of the patient isn't optimal for their circumstances. In other words, don't create risk when you don't have to.

As to anaesthesia affecting infection, it doesn't, but again, if you don't have to go in under those circumstances then you don't. The only thing may be infected tissue being fragile and compromised if they are going to be scoping in that area.

The Surgeon changed Grace's g-tube and passed her for the scopes.:dance:

So I just pray the infection is gone for good.

He (Surgeon) said the same things y'all did. Basically don't add problems if we don't have to.

Who says YAY for scopes?! We do!

Good luck hun...:ghug:...I hope all goes well for Princess Grace with the scopes and the infection is gonski! :goodluck:
