Hi .....

Muy name is Aimee I am 28 and have just found out I have Crohns Disease. I started iut at the Doctors with suspected appendacitis... Dr sne tme to Hospital, appendacitis suspected by them also. I had an operation within 24hours of arriving at hospital to remove my so called rupturing appendix.... I wake up form op to be told "well it wasnt your appendix after all but we founf a mass in your bowel... i was so out of it from the anathestic i cn barley remeber any of this conversation.
Another 12 hours later i am told it was not a mass they found but an inflamed colon? i think i am still unsure of where the inflamation is they have not old me some two weeks ago.... I have a specialist appointment in 2 weeks so i am hoping i can find out more about this disease i have, because so far i am left to do my own re4search and find out from others what this disease actually means for me.

BTW i am in Auckland, New Zealand and soooooo have no faith in the medical profession over here now.... Any advice tips on what to eat avoid etc very much appreciated..

Cheers

Welcome Aimee! Your experience sounds like mine. They first thought my appendix, did laporoscopy removed appendix only to tell me that was not the problem. Found alot of swollen lymph nodes, but nothing else. After scans, scopes, etc. then came the diagnosis of crohns.

I hope your appointment goes well and that you get some better answers. You will find alot of great, useful information here.

I had a similar experience, minus the surgery. It took several weeks for them to diagnose me correctly.

Foods to avoid... I would suggest against seeds of any kind, corn, anything with bran or high fiber, and alcohol. Most of these are not fully digested by the body and will irritate you as they pass through. Alcohol in general will irritate the bowel, if I remember correctly. Creamed soups and yogurt were and are staples when my Crohn's flares up. It is easy to digest and doesn't cause a lot of discomfort.

I hope you feel better. Take it easy for a while and keep your spirits up!

Dan :)

Hi Aimee...

Another chrohnie diagnosed on the operating table here. My diagnosis was a long time ago, though.

Your own body will give you the best "advice" as far as what or what not to eat. It's always going to be a work in progress. Every person is different.

Hope it gets better for you. Coming to terms with the fact you have a chronic condition is stressful in itself. Take care.

hey aimee and welcome

agreed that its up to your own body to tell you what foods you can tolerate. youll see that we are all different- some can have nuts some cant, some are cool with raw veggies and some not so much, etc.
but as general advice- a lot of roughage is harder for your intestines to digest, especially when they are in an inflamed state. if youre having trouble with eating and food in general, supplemantal drinks like boost or ensure are great to get some "gentler" calories.
good luck at your appt. hope you get some good answers!

thanks everyone, itsso nice to find this forum where everyone understands what you are going throuhg... i am on no meds at the moment as i could not take pantassa or asacol so have to wait to see my specialist before i get anymore, in the meantime i am still getting nausea ands fevers arghhhh this sux big time :-(
Thanks everyone once again some great advice cheers ! xx

wow, they wanted to take out my apendix but after being sick for so long (seriously things fell in to place over 8 years , not all at once for me) I was just like no way, you aren't taking any body parts untill you know for sure you need to so... it has been about a year now since i got diagnosed and what can I say, there are up's and down's and the Dr still hasn't got me on a med that I can say totally fixes everything. For me the biggest issue is waking up in the middle of the night with sharp killer pains.... and still getting a few of those "friendly" pains while i am awake (like now for example)

hi Aimee & welcome to the forum :)

i think everyone's given you fab advice so far regarding eating... the gentler the food, the better, especially when you're flaring.

if you can devise a diet for yourself which is easily digestible but nutritious, you won't go far wrong. you can always take a vitamin & mineral supplement if you feel your diet is poor in these. sometimes the liquid/drink ones are easier to digest than the tablet form.

good luck! let us know how the appointment goes.

You can also get carnation instant breakfast which is a lot cheaper and has the same nutrition. They sell one without sugar if your worried about sugar intake. A nurse told me it has the same nutritional value as boost and ensure and is a heck of a lot cheaper. It's about 3.59 for ten packets. You just add milk.
