There are about a hundred good reason to take Turmeric or the more concentrated form Curcumin.

Here is one more to add the the list.

That study, which was also Thai-based, followed 240 adults with pre-diabetes who were randomly assigned to either take curcumin capsules or a placebo that looked identical but contained no active ingredient, Reuters reported.

After nine months, 19 of the 116 placebo patients had developed Type II diabetes, compared to none of the 119 patients who took the curcumin.

Not to mention that people with Crohn's are often on medication that stresses and can even damage the liver. If Turmeric and Curcumin can help the liver, all the better for us.

I wish I responded better to Turmeric but I unfortunately had a bad response to it. After reading the other thread about Turmeric, I tried it for 2 weeks and my GERD went extra crazy during those 2 weeks. Upon stopping Turmeric, I felt much better almost immediately and the GERD calmed down to its usual level. I hadn't changed anything else during that time so it must have been the Turmeric. I had a similar bad reaction to probiotics - I guess my body doesn't like things that are supposed to be good for it. It's a shame! For others reading this, I would encourage you to give Turmeric a try as it does offer a lot of benefits - but keep an eye on things too as sometimes it can do more harm than good.

I haven't tried Tumeric yet but like Cat-a-Tonic I too have issues with most things that should be good for me. I think most people have given up suggesting any help as they think I'm just not bothered but its the exact opposite. I would almost anything if I thought it would give me some relief.
Will give Tumeric a go.

I hope people take turmeric more than curcumin.I understand curcumin contains more anti inflammatory properties because of the concentration but i guess i believe in keeping the natural compound in its true form. I think other parts of turmeric can help sufficiently aid curcumin in benefitting the body to its full potential and vice versa.

Supplement companies and researchers always try to separate beneficial parts of natural compounds with out realizing the importance of keeping them together.
Pet peeve of mine

I think you would have to eat a ton of turmeric (more than anyone would be willing to eat in one sitting) to get the full beneficial effect.

Perhaps it would be best to just use both (if you can)--but if you take curcumin, be sure to take it with fat for proper absorption.

This study shows curcumin to be helpful for IBD.

I think taking both is a good idea. Both forms have their own benefits that are helpful.

That is the approach I am going to use.

@ Cat-a-tonic : you can take it in meals and in a curry form mixed with other spices.

@ Gianni : I totally agree with you and honestly I just do not understand one thing in the western world, why do people always go for pill form of everything and things that are sold only at the pharmacy and do not even try the natural things. nature has given us all the things that we need for ourselves....all we are doing is getting back to nature for our cures..for example turmeric...its just another root plant that has come for our rescue. If we had alway used it, we would have never got ouselves into this position. I strongly belive that one day the same scientists are gonna say that the curcumin in the natural form like in turmeric is more beneficial.

Unfortunately there are much larger forces forcing their hand here in America. I doubt such a day is any time soon unfortunately :(

Yeah, the companies that manufacture this stuff want you to buy their version instead of the natural form and tell you that it's 100 times more potent than the natural form because they like to feed off the American notion that more is always better.

People can wait for scientists to say whatever they want. All you need to do is take one look at Asian medicine and see how successful they have been using roots, herbs etc.. in their natural form since ancient times. Just look at the population of China it exceeds a billion people! What other non-asian group of people can say their medicine has been that successful?

Here is yet another reason to use Turmeric. It is hard to keep up with all the benefits that this one spice has.

A 2005 study by Wang and her team first showed that curcumin suppressed the growth of head and neck cancer, first in cells and then in mouse models. In the animal studies, the curcumin was applied directly onto the tumors in paste form. In a 2010 study, also done in cells and in mouse models, the research team found that the curcumin suppressed head and neck cancer growth by regulating cell cycling, said scientist Eri Srivatsan, an adjunct professor of surgery, article author and a Jonsson Cancer Center researcher who, along with Wang, has been studying curcumin and its anti-cancer properties for seven years.

Curcumin, a natural phenol and derivative of turmeric, may be responsible for many of these effects -- particularly the anti-cancer benefits. Used by ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, curcumin has been shown to reduce brain tumor size by 81% in 9 out of 11 studies. With the research published in the July edition of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, scientists found that curcumin dramatically decreased the size of brain tumors by 81% in 9 out of 11 studies without evidence of toxicity.
