Antibiotic Exposure and IBD Development Among Children: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

This is the study the showed a dose response effect, which is one criteria of proving causation. There are at least 3 other studies showing antibiotics increase the risk of IBD, but don't prove this single variable can cause the disease itself.

Neither of my kids had antibiotics until after they were diagnosed with Crohn’s. So 14 years and 17 years respectively. Clearly they played no part in my kids developing the disease.

I believe our exposure to anbiotics is greater and broader than we think. In western countries, meats are a big portion of our food regimen and high intake of meats have been associated with increased risks of developing IBD and colorectal cancer too. And in conventional intensive animal stock breeding, animals are being ABUSED and filled with antibiotics and hormones for SOLE objective of increased productivity :stinks:... that we thereafter ingest. Im am convinced regularly eating animal meat coming for conventional antibiotics pro-farming can play a role on our own health and microbiome. the combination of both these variable, high consumption and antibiotic filled meats intake, expands the the view of antibiotics exposure imo. ''Preventive Antibiotics'' in animal farming should be banned and considered abusive practice to the lovely animals. it disgusts me that society still tolerates and encourages those intensive conventional animal farming practices. And I skip the part of cruel, barbaric practices used on top of it. we would never treat our pets the way we treat these poor animals, and some of those poor animals who have been unluckily chosen for the flavor and quality of their meats are as gentle and intelligent as dogs and cats, porks are a good example. :(

You are correct, people have been unknowingly exposed to antibiotics in animal products. I think these are growth promoting antibiotics though, obesity, bone size and height may be affected the most. hard to know if IBD can be affected by these but many studies consistently find that excessive animal products are linked to development of all diseases.

same factors pretty much involved in modern chronic diseases are,
Vitamin d which is protective
too much meat and animal products
not enough fiber from whole fruits and veggies
and now antibiotics are being linked to IBD and other diseases.

the antibiotics in farms are not only growth promoting antibiotics. I know in beef cattle, they are given to the beef so that they can eat large amount of detrimental diet :grains such as corn and soy (which are always GMO on top of it) in order to fasten caloric intake and growth. Beef can tolerate a 3 months intake of corn and soy without being sick, but after 3 months of consumption, they become really sick in the stomach. Antibiotics are used to avoid stomach disease in beef fed with exaggerated amount of grains. The natural and healthy diet for such animals is grass. if I remember correct a grass fed beef matures in 2 years and a grain-fed beef in 1 year, this is pure insanity.

yea i think you are right. Controlling infections is another reason antibiotics are given to farm animals.
