I've got bronchitis and was just put on 5 days worth of an antibiotic called Azithromycin (not sure if I spelled that right) to treat it. Antibiotics always rile up my guts with cramping and d, and this time is no exception. Last time I was on antibiotics, I was on Nitrofuratonin (also not sure if I spelled that right!) for a UTI, and I took probiotics with that antibiotic to try to counter the effects on my gut. But probiotics don't seem to do much for me and in fact they seem to worsen my GERD, and they didn't do a thing for me when I was on Nitrofuratonin so I'm not even bothering with probiotics this time around. Does anyone know of any other ways to counteract the watery d caused by antibiotics? Or do I just need to wait until my gut flora repopulates itself naturally?

Wow do I understand...but I sure dont know how to help! I just took small amounts of immodium and wished for the best. I've got Stan now, and it's a help, but oh, how I hate antibiotics. They also tend to make me flare! And you can hear my gut from here to Kentucky!

Hope you get some good advice, cause I'm listening!

Some work good with the Crohns some don't. We are all different, but D is common with alot. As mentioned in other posts, probiotics do help and to help the Gerd, (I have a Hiatus hernia) I use nexium to protect the stomach lining and prevent heartburn.

I got diarrhea last time I took nitrofurantoin for a uti too. Whenever I take antibiotics I just accept the inevitable D :( But if you wanted you could give Imodium a shot. It turns your poop ultra solid! hehe

Whenever you kill off a lot of bacteria, by any means, your body has to get rid of the dead stuff. The D is a natural response, so it is better just to let it fly.

Dan, that's a good way of thinking about it, thanks!

Emily, I am going to a big Halloween party/festival thing tomorrow and there will only be port-a-potties and I'll be in a hoop skirt, so I think I'm going to pop a Lomotil beforehand (it seems like Lomotil works better for me than Imodium does). Definitely don't want to have to deal with d in that situation!
