Hi everyone
New to here but i am curious as a 29 year old 6 years suffering crohns Police officer, i need advice discussion about any problems you may have or have not had with it.

I have particular trouble recently around rotating shifts and am now looking at having some issues with the Occupational health.

Anyone out there with similar problems or similar jobs that have had problems i appreciate your advice

Hi clarkie! I am not an office and can't offer any advice, but I did want to give you a warm welcome to our forum. I am not too sure of any Police officers on our forum, though. However, there are several members who are in the military, and I understand it can be difficult.

I sure hope others with more to add will come along to offer some advice.

Hi Clarkie and welcome to the forum. Like Jill, I'm not a police officer, but there are plenty of those in my extended family. My brother is a Crohnie like me, and he was in law enforcement for a while. He had to change his line of work, but he misses the job. I think he looking into other options within the realm of law enforcement. Is there any chance that you could stay in law enforcement, but work at a desk job. My brother claims that you have be higher on the rung to do that. I wish I could offer more help. Good luck, and please make yourself at home in the forum.

Ladies
thank you for the warm welcome, I am fighting against my organisation who might be looking at medically retire me. I believe I may be lucky in my suffering as I only have azathiprine.
Out of interest do you have any foods that worsen your ibs like symptoms?

I am sorry to hear about the possiblity of medical retirement. How many years do you have in?

Diet is different for everyone. What may be OK for me, may not be for you. When I am doing pretty well, my diet isn't too limited. I only steer clear of salad, spicy foods, and deli meat. However, I also tend to avoid some items most seem to have a tough time with: raw fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, and anything too high in fiber. Other items people may struggle with dairy and gluten if there is an intolerance. Luckily, I seem ok with these.

What I suggest is to keep a food diary. I record what I eat and any symptoms afterward. It will help you figure out your safe and no-no foods.

:welcome: Nice to meet you Clarkie! Sorry I'm not in law enforcement, but wanted to welcome you to the forum. I know it's a difficult job (my father-in-law is retired LAPD) and I admire your commitment to serving others. :thumleft:

To answer your question about trigger foods, for me here's a short list:
Nuts, full-fat anything, high fiber breads and cereals, curries, seeds, alcoholic drinks (esp tequila), Indian/Middle Eastern foods, MSG.

If you're in a flare, though, anything it seems can be a trigger. There's a thread here about Safe foods; if you search it there's alot of responses which might help you get started.

I hope the various military/law enforcement Crohnnies can give you more help on the job.

Hey Clarkie158,
I've been an officer for 27 yrs, Crohns for 20 Yrs.
I worked my way into a desk job so I could get my Crohns
in order. I never had rotating shifts....I'm a morning person
so the day shift has always been better for my system...
Good Luck!!!

I have been a police officer for 9 years and had crohns for 6 I have been dealing with everything operations commanding 30+ people, to talking people out of suicide and saving lives. All of which when I do my mind distracted I think nothing of my crohns or anxities around needing the toilet, but quiet times it is all I can think about.
I tried to get one of hundreds of office jobs and suddenly after 6 years I don't meet the business needs, anyone tell me if this would be any breach against the DDA.

You say that I think of nothing but Crohns and anxities, it is all I can think about...You have to change that!!
I took my diag. as this is going to be an inconvenience and I was not going to allow this the run my life. Maybe your Crohns is worst then mine but
my Crohns has not caused me to have any limitations as far as my profession.

I'm glad you found a fellow officer. My brother wasn't far enough in the ranks for a desk job, but he's still interested in the field. I told him to look into another aspect of it. He's worked in other fields, but that's not where his interest lies. My uncle was the Captain of the Anchorage, Alaska Police Department. I was interested in the field when I was in my 20s. I am a teacher now. It's nice having a restroom in my classroom.

As for foods, these are what really bother my CD: corn (all varieties), raw veggies (they have to be cooked until soft), berries (the seeds), fruits with thick skins (especially grapes), and whole grain/chunky grain breads.

If your stomach is that bad it is worth talking to your doc about new meds. If its all mental then u just have to learn to relax and learn to trust ur body again. Are you a member of a union, if so give them a call regarding ur job, if not CAB may be able to help
