Does anyone of you take no medicines at all? How did you do it? Can supplements replace meds?

I'm so afraid of the long term effects of taking medicine all our lives!!!

There's me . . . I am on no medications. But I take a supplement called mangosteen juice (XanGo is the ONLY brand with such potency). I, too, was afraid of the long term effects of medications and flat out was terrified to begin the 6mp they wanted me to take. Then, this came along, and in 3 weeks I was in remission pain-free and nearly completely symptom free too. Holding steady now 7 months after I was supposed to have surgery to remove 18 inches of small intestine.

not me, im in it for the long haul. (remicade and methotrexate)
I will take a break some day Im sure, and hope that I can take remicade again, or that humira will be approved by the time I need it.

Mmmm med's, I have never known a life without medications sadly, diagnosed at 5 years old and now 25 and would hate to think the amount of pills I have taken in that time, a rough estimation and I would calculate I have taken over 87,600 pills to control the crohns since I was 5.
Scarey!!!!!!!!!!! very damn scarey

No. Supplemtents can NOT replace medication. You shouldnt let inflammation go untreated, and thats what happening with being on no medication.

Hi

ive been in remission and med free for over 3 years!!!
im one ot the lucky ones x

My friends mom works for Abbott and said Humira was just approved for Crohn's Disease (even though I've been taking it for over a year now, mwahahaha...I'm a special case) ;)

Yesterday at the supplement shop, I met someone else with IBD. Finally another person in Lebanon with this. She told me she suffered for about 23 years with it, taking Prednisone all this time. But about 2 years she took Remicade and since then she's feeling excellent and takes no medicine at all. She gave me more confidence that we all can conquer this disease and live a long almost normal life.....

hi mazen
i have suffered for 19 years. multiple obstructions, only one big surgery. tons and tons of meds. everythign in the book really. went on remicade 4 yrs ago and stayed on for 2.5 yrs. at which point all my tests came back a-ok, so i went off remicade and am now med free. i also eliminated stress from my life, practice yoga everyday and eat healthily. i really believe all these factors can help bring anyone into remission.
the meds are narly. last year i found out that i now have osteoporosis and i am only 35 yrs old! apparently the steroids and the crohn's are the guilty culprits. grrrr.

lol EBD seems kinda backwards to me, find a med that works, and STOP IT!, risk the antibodies? doesnt make a bit of sense to me, doesnt mean there is no inflammation. I've had colonoscopies come back perfect when having crohns colitis, doesnt mean I dont have crohns.

and Amanda, abbott is doign a clinical trial, all you have to do is call abbott, its free, they'll pay for the med until approved in feb, or march....and if its pushed back to be approved you still get it for free. There are barely any musts for the clinical trial. Even I can participate which I am starting soon, with an ostomy....which most reasons people with ostomies can NOT participate is because there is no way to measure their output.....or tell the difference in diahrea and not.

I hate to give you a hard time EBH, I think it might be lowering the stress and doing yoga that might be doing the GOOD for you, not the NOT being on medications...

By the way, years "conquering" the disease might mean, working a full-time job, holding down a family and leading a normal life...thats not conquering, thats having a light case....there are varieties in cases, Which I've rapidly noticed since going to the local teaching hospital.

Whether you've had it 40 years or 4...The person with 4, might have been through 15 times more. '

Its bad but in my eyes, if you have crohns, and get by on an anti-inflammatory, or even get by without a surgery in your lifetime, YOUR LUCKY!, your amazingly lucky to me, and I would give up a lot to have no had my surgeries, I would have given up a lot to just have one less surgery actually...out of the MANY.

You can definately treat crohn's without medications. Suppliments and holistic healing can replace them if not do better, you just have to do your homework. There are a few books out there that are good guides. My personal experience is that my own research has revealed much more to me than anything my doctors have suggested.

Many people have good success with drugs like remicade, steroids, and anti-inflamation meds, but make sure you research their side effects first. I have heard some horror stories. My biggest problem with drugs/surgery is that they only treat the syptoms, the underlying problem remains. Holistic healing with suppliments, diet and lifestyle changes can address the underlying problems. Even if you go into remission through suppliments or drug treatment, you never truly get rid of crohn's. Some type of syptoms will follow you in some capacity for the rest of your life.

Everyone's decision is their own, but I just wanted to make it known that there are several people out there who go into remission from Crohn's without drug treatment. There are natural options.

I agree that everyone should find whats best for them, and if they find something that works, great news, and sure stick with it.. but to say we all have a choice in the treatment we chose is a bit of wishful thinking in my mind.. maybe for some people, they can pick and chose.. others dont have a choice with what will work, or not work, or even a choice of having surgery.. could mean life or death.
If any of you find that things like yoga, juices, or natural options have worked for you.. im very happy and more than a bit envious that that worked for you, keep up the great work, and I hope you manage to keep well for many years.

A lot of times I've been forced into making the decisions I've made, becuase of health reasons, I couldnt wait longer or I would die, literally, 3 or 4 times. Sometimes its not a choice when you have a more severe case.
