Where is your daughter’s Crohn’s located SupportiveMom?
Does she have any strictures?
My daughter was on Questran post operatively due to bile salt malabsorption diarrhoea. She found it very unpalatable and so refused to take it, it’s not the taste that was an issue but rather the texture. She was 14 at the time so I don’t know how big a part this may have played in it. At the visit to the GI after it prescribed the doctor stated that he was not surprised that she wasn’t taking it.
Some time later, as the diarrhoea persisted, he suggested Metamucil. This is primarily made up of psyllium but Sarah found it caused her bloating and cramping. Some time later she tried natural psyllium husks which caused her no issues. I can’t explain what the difference was between the Metamucil and the natural psyllium, I can only assume there may have additives with more commercially produced product?? Anyway the psyllium worked a treat for her and it literally gave her her life back. After my son also had a resection he too started taking psyllium.
Psyllium works the same way as Questran and they both have the same precautions for use:
- You must be wary of the amounts when starting out as constipation may well result with too much.
- It must be used with caution if you suspect a stricture may be present.
- You must not take medications/supplements with either substance. They need to be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Questran/Psyllium.
Hope that helps!
