Hi guys, I'm new to the forum site. I'd like to introduce myself, my name id Gavin and I'm 26. I've was diagnosed with the wonderful crohn's disease since I was 13, although I started with symptoms from the age of 11. I had my first surgery at 13, basically my condition became so severe I was rushed into hospital with a stricture that had completely closed up, I remember being sick every 3-4 mins and nothing was coming up! Although this was a very distressing time for me and my family, I remember feeling a great sense of relief that finally they had diagnosed my condition and I was going to finally get well again.

After about 5 years of being well I started again with similar symptoms, following a barium meal I was told I had another stricture and that surgery was my best option. So surgery at 18, remember thinking "god they can't keep taking chunks from my small intestine!" But sure enough they did. The spell of remission wasn't long at all after this one, I started with symptoms within a year and had another surgery for a resection at 21. Three and counting!

So at 21 just had my 3rd resection, I decided to try something new and self medicate. Years of prednisolone, azathioprine, pentasa and countless other medications just weren't working for me. A friend a the gym started me on testosterone injections (anabolic steroids). To my surprise I started to feel a lot better, more vigour, increased energy levels and finaly got that confidence I'd been looking for all my life.

I continued on and off courses of Testosterone, Nandrolone, Dianabol, winstrol etc.. basically anything I could get my hands on. They seemed to help me stay in remission for about 4-5 years and I can honestly say I've done more with my life in that time than most healthy people I know. They have been the best years of my life.

However, sure enough (and you could sense a BUT coming) I started with problems late last year. Anabolic Steroids seemed to stop helping me and I was questioning whether they were making my condition worse?? I have developed another stricture and decided to try HUMIRA a new type of treatment. The HUMIRA did not work. After 6 weeks of trying it I was worse than ever, so as my doctor rightly put it "we're scraping the medicine draw with you now Gavin, surgery seems to be your last option".

I'm booked in to see the surgeon in 2 weeks and i've come to grips with the fact that I need another resection. To be honest every day my condition is getting worse, and I know even if the surgery only helps for a short time, it'll be worth it.

I think my next port of call will be to look at the Stem Cell Treatment Private clinics are offering. £24,000 I saw one for, although I don't even remotely have this sort of money at my disposal I'm still optomistic. Has anyone heard anything good about this treatment? It says it can offer a cure and works by retuning the immune system so it doesn't attack your intestine.

Anyway wish me luck with my next surgery and feel free to message me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Welcome to the forum Gavin!

I also was undiagnosed for several years and remember the relief that came from a diagnosis also.

I will wish you luck on your next surgery! I have no personal experience with Stem cell treatments but it does appear to be an emerging area of interest. After your surgery it might make sense to contact the clinic and see if you can meet with someone there. I am sure they would do a free consultation and they can give you some facts and figures that can help you make the decision if such a treatment option is worthwhile. They may also have flexible payment options or know of government or other programs that could help you pay for the program.

I hope the next two weeks are easy to deal with and that the surgery will get you back to health.

Welcome Gavin to the forum. I wish you luck on your upcoming surgery. I can not answer your questions as I dont know anything about the stem cell treatment. But wanted to welcome you..

Hi Gavin and welcome! I'm glad you found your way to the forum.

I find it quite interesting that anabolic steroids took you to remission. I wonder if it was the roids of the exercise that was more beneficial. I'd love for you to start a thread detailing your experience and what you did during this time of your life, if you're so inclined.

As someone who did anabolic steroids in the past, I'm certainly not one to judge. But as we both know, the side effects of prolonged use can be quite problematic.

Regarding stem cells, you may want to check out Stem cells and crohn's disease.

Also, we have a surgery forum under "Treatment" which may be of use to you or that you might be able to provide insight to others.

See you around :)
