Hi all! I am running into quite a few roadblocks with getting started on EEN. Right now everything I eat hurts. I am so inflamed that I get triggered very easily and my stomach feels pretty much raw. I don't have a gallbladder, which means I have a steady stream of bile, so if I don't eat every so often to soak up the bile it will further irritate my intestines. That's why I am still eating solids now while waiting to find an elemental shake diet which I can tolerate.
My big issue is that they are ALL made with corn! Whether it's corn syrup, corn maltodextine or corn dextrose, it's all corn. And some have corn + soy products too. I am allergic to soy and intolerant to corn. I had the leap MRT test done which confirmed my corn intolerance suspicion. Basically when my white blood cells come into contact with corn they start to explode and create an inflammatory response. It would be super counter intuitive to go on EEN but be putting an inflammatory substance in my body 24/7. And yes, even though it doesn't have much protein left in it my body still reacts. Corn syrup solids are an instant stomach ache & so is anything with dextrose.
Any healthier alternatives out there? It seems odd that the very medical food which sensitive patients rely on is the very same food which does a terrible job of being patient friendly. Corn is a huge allergen trigger for a lot of people, so it's strange!
Any tips or brands to consider? Does anyone know of a compounding pharmacy who does custom orders? Thanks!
