Yesterday was a day from HELL. My son had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon at the children's hospital in the morning and a GI appointment at the same hospital in the afternoon. Even though we had a scheduled appointment with ortho we had to wait for 3 HOURS to get seen! :voodoo: We were then told that the good news is that it is not avascular necrosis which is what they were looking for given his prednisone use. Bad news was they still don't know why he can't walk. They then told us to keep doing physio and sent us on our way. :voodoo:

At this point in the day there was no point in going home and then returning for the GI appointment so we killed some time in the hospital. FUN. Got to the GI appointment 1 hour early as I figured that we might as well wait there on the off chance they could see us sooner. Of course they couldn't see us sooner (not surprised at that) and in fact they were running 1.5 hours late!!! :voodoo: Finally see GI and she is totally perplexed as to what is going on with my son. His labs are good. The MRI doesn't show anything alarming but he still feels like crap, hasn't been able to make it through a full day of school since January. So we got the talk preparing us for the real possibility that azathioprine isn't working and preparing us for the next step, either methotrexate or Remicade in conjunction with azathioprine. I was surprised to hear that they only recommend Remicade be used at the same time as azathioprine. I know it is probably a bit irrational, I understand why they are recommending the two drugs be used in combination, but I was completely thrown by this suggestion. Nothing like the possibility of a fatal cancer to make a mother PANIC.

In the end we have decided to give the azathioprine some more time to work. I want to give it a month but our GI doesn't want to wait that long... We are adding Pentasa to our list of meds in the hopes that it might help along with all the others and apparently there is some evidence that it can help with the leg issue. When I asked how it could possibly help with the leg issue I was told they don't really know why it works but sometimes it does!?!?!?! :voodoo: :voodoo: :voodoo: Anyhow, I have no problem adding Pentasa on the off chance that it might change things for the better. I am really hoping that the azathioprine works and works SOON.

Sorry for the rambling and poorly worded post. My brain is shot!

God, Twiggy...that sounds nightmarish.

I know some docs will NOT give Remicade with azathioprine or its other forms due to the cancer risk, so I'm surprised to hear they will ONLY give them together?

As to him feeling far worse than labs/imaging would seem to dictate...well, you've read my posts about Violet. I live with that mystery daily for six months now. :stinks: I'd be going down the differential path in your case as I did with V...what if he has a concomitant thing?

I can certainly relate. When they make sense it's so much easier.

What a horrible day!! :ymad: And I can't imagine how frustrating for you (and Julie:)) to not have a clear explanation of what is wrong. :voodoo:

I hope it's just a case of not enough time yet for the Aza and that, with the Pentasa, they kick in and work soon!!

Perhaps it's worth trying LDN - I don't know of any conflicts with Aza and/or Pentasa but, from all I've read, side effects from LDN itself seem to be minimal.

I hope you begin to see some improvement very soon!! :ghug:

I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get any solid answers, ugh...

As Julie has said, the labs are only part of the story. Sarah was also one in which bloods never reflected what was going on so I made the promise to myself that in her case I would always look to what was in front of me to gauge how she was progressing. If the bloods reflected that then that was a bonus.

I don't know hun...maybe the leg issue is a manifestation that shows the flare is not under control and until that happens the problem won't resolve. I agree with you giving the Imuran longer. You can't have been on it three months as yet and that figure is the minimum time frame for it become fully therapeutic, it can extend out to six months for some people.

I have everything crossed that you are on the brink of the Imuran kicking in and weaving its magic!

Good luck!

Dusty are you channeling our GI ?!?!? I think that is exactly what is going on.

We got to a pool on Friday night and that helped. He liked it so much we spent 2 hours there! At one point he looked at me with a big smile and said, "it is so nice to be able to move!".

So glad to hear the pool helped.
Ds is on the swim team so that is only thing that has saved us this past year.

Wishing you the best of luck with the added pentasa
:goodluck:

Just now reading this post. What a sucky day!! Although I am glad to hear that the MRI didn't show any surprises. That's a good thing! I feel so bad for S that his little leg still hurts. Praying the pentasa helps with that! It also sucks big time that our boys are sacraficing so much by doing EN and not getting the desired results from it. Makes me down right mad :mad2:.

Don't they say it could take up to 6 months to get the full affects of Imuran?
