Morning all (or evening depending on where in this wonderful world you are :) )

I've been on Azathioprine now for a couple of weeks. Started off on 50mg a day just to try and build a tolerance to it then after 7 days was bumped up to 200mg per day. First 10 days or so no problems.

I started noticing at the start of this week that when I went to the toilet (number 1 not number 2), my urine was very dark but not everytime I went, some occasions it was perfectly normal. I am still drinking the same amount of fluids per day as I was before, maybe even slightly more than before I started any medication and naturally was a little shocked/surprised by this.

Then............................................................

2 nights ago, curled up in bed I noticed a pain in the left hand side of my back/side slowly starting to build up until it became unbearable. I couldn't get comfortable, I took paracetemol, drank about 2 pints of water and ended up sat on the sofa all night watching TV. I emailed our GI nurses the following day (thats the part of this illness that I think is actually brilliant - direct access to medical professionals) and explained the symptoms to them. They advised me that it was possible for the medication to have side effects with your kidneys. They have booked me an early appointment with the consultant for next week though (wasn't due to see him for 6 - 8 weeks) to talk it through with him. I did have a CT scan and blood test earlier in the week so hopefully something may show up from those.

As for the kidney pain, it comes and goes. Today, no pain at all, urine normal, I even had a nicely formed poo first thing (even though I'd been to a BBQ the night before!! :ybatty: ).

This illness is baffling, one minute fine, the next immense pain and no clear clue as to why!

Anyone else experienced any of the above?? Interested to hear and also what the eventual outcome was.

Hi Guts Ache,

With so many different people having such different symptoms to their diseases and being on different treatment plans, it is often hard to find people going through the exact same thing you are. Azathioprine has many side effects, and it is not uncommon for them to take some time to actually occur (since it takes some time for this drug to have its intended effect).

Try your best to take things in stride. Hopefully the pain continues to stay away and whatever you had was just short term. Please keep us updated!
