So my husband has been having a flare for about 3 weeks now. His GI couldn't see him til today. He ended going to the ER 5 times for relief! His GI doesn't give pain meds and the only relief he would get was going to the ER. Well we saw the Dr today and he was a complete jerk! He wants to do a colonoscopy and when I asked how soon it could be done because he has already missed two weeks of work, he replied well it will be done in a timely matter, if he needs treatment he has to miss work that's the way it is. Very rudely. Well your not gonna pay my bills are you! Every time i've ever mentioned missing work he always responds the same way. Then when I brought up pain meds (my husband never speaks up!) he said "he has to deal, he doesn't look like he's in too much pain to me" I got really upset then. I told him he is, he's been depressed for days b/c he doesn't know what to do anymore, he cant work or play with the kids or even function! So he says we'll put him in the hospital with IV steroids which is what we were trying to get him to do in the first place! I know i'm rambling, but I'm so frsutrated. Plus he yelled at us for not going to his ER. His office moved farther away and it was late at night with 2 kids. Plus he never speicifally told us to go there and he said I keep telling you to go there! Then brought up AGAIN that we stoped taking medicine 3 years ago when we weren't supossed to. We learned from that, we arent gonna do that again! How many times do we have to talk about that!!! Plus he said he doesn't write scrips for pain meds becase we may go out and wreck our car or get addicted and then have a whole new problem. Just makes no sense b/c they could just stop writing the scrip!! Sighs! So he said if we need pain meds he can have IV pain meds. It was just so discouraging b/c he is in so much pain, what else can we do.

Very long story short- they put him in the hospital with iv steroids and are doing a colonoscopy tomorrow. Hopefully no surgery but we will see. Sorry to ramble. Just getting it all out.

Hello Crohn'swife!

I am so sorry your husband has been having a tough couple of weeks & having an insensitive GI isn't helpful either! Will his GI prescribe muscle relaxors at the very least? Most muscle relaxors don't help me but Flexeril has really helped me when I am constantly going to the bathroom & having spasms.

Unfortunately, certain GI's don't believe in prescribing medications, probably due to incresed addiction rates. :stinks: I am a Junior in highschool & even my GI prescribes me Lortabs as needed(although I have been flaring for a few years now & need them just to attend school.) Your husband doesn't deserve to be treated like a druggy because he is experiancing REAL pain. He has a family & job to tend to for crying out loud!

I hope the scope goes well & the IV steroids always help me to get some relief. Hopefully the scopes will be the push the GI needs to prescribe better medication so he can get better!

Always praying for my fellow crohnies & their families! :hang:

Thanks. We are going to look for a new GI. It's just always so hard. Where to start? sighs. The 2 we've seen in the hospital have been very nice, however they are his assosiates so that won't really help. But he had a colonoscopy today and it looked pretty good. Problem was right at the rectum and he thinks a few more days on IV steriods should do it. No surgery!! Yay!! Still need a new dr tho!

I swear doctor's are a huge part of the stress in dealing with Crohn's. (Or anything for that matter.) I find I always have a good initial visit, and then subsequent visits just get worse. It's can't just be me. My doctor was irritated that my primary referred me to a general surgeon for my colonoscopy instead of him, a GI. He said it was "hospital politics". Well, no one at the time was sure I needed a GI, and secondly, isn't this supposed to be about my care and not who gets the insurance payment? I really hope you can find a new one. You both deserve it and it's worth the fight.

I used some of the doctor review sites to scope mine out. Even so, first visit good, second one not so much, and next week I'll see how the third one goes. But who knows, someone else could have been worse?

Anyway, kudos to you for being a supportive spouse - my husband is my saving grace (and jar opener for his spindly little weak wife ;-). That in itself is a great "medicine"!
