It's official!! I have inflammation in both my hips. Hooray! I'm 36 years old and I just turned 50 with this news my doctor just gave me!! Suuucks! Damn IBD. What else are ya gonna do to me???

Keep stretching throughout the day and that may help. This will keep the blood circulating around the area and help it heal. Good luck!

I'm only going on 24 in a few weeks and ever since I started getting Crohns last year....I noticed my hips and joints hurt a lot! When my hips hurt they HURT! :O Oh nooooo

Stretching and strengthening the joints can help. I have issues with my right hip. At first I was told it's mild arthritis by my GP. Then later he referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who changed the diagnosis to bursitis and he said there probably isn't arthritis present, or if there is then it's so mild it's barely there. My GP still feels I have some arthritis in my hip although I tend to believe the orthopedic surgeon over the GP on this one. (My GP is great, but he's not an expert on this like the ortho surgeon is.)

So anyway, I was initially sent to physical therapy for arthritis, and the treatment for arthritis is to strengthen the joint in question as well as the joints around it (lower back, thighs, glutes, etc). The ortho surgeon said that the physical therapy for bursitis would be stretching, which I elected to do myself rather than go back to PT. The stretches and strengthening have both helped my hip although I think the stretches have helped more which also leads me to believe this is bursitis and not arthritis (though it could be a bit of both!).

Long story short, try gentle stretches and see if that helps. If you are able to exercise, try some gentle exercise of the hips and surrounding muscles too. Just a few minutes a day should help. I went from having a lot of hip pain and was limping at times and thinking about buying a cane, to now having zero hip pain and no limp and I feel great.

My right hip did bother me, it has since subsided, or maybe I just am not noticing it alone since my sciatic nerve has been giving me hell on the right side, probably due to the Crohn's since I am in a flare. I remember when I was first diagnosed and on meds, I had terrible arthritis in my knees and ankles. It is very much a terrible feeling to be that young and waking up every day feeling like a senior citizen. Hugs!

If you can tolerate it, try Bikram Yoga. It is a 90 minute yoga class of 26 stretches (done twice each). It is in a warm room (approx. 103 degrees), which helps your body stretch a little easier. Not only will it help loosen up the joints, but you will find amazing stress relief in your body. Worth a try! I have found it extremely helpful and it is great how your feel afterward.

have you looked into ankylosing spondylitis. This cause arthritis in the spine and si (hip area) joints. you might want to consult a rhematoglist some medications can help and prevent more damage.

new hip

Don't ignore chronic hip pain. I was diagnosed only 3 years ago this June with crohns. Before this I had hip pain, shooting pain from my tailbone and pain when walking sharp shooting pain-- went to Dr's, chiropracter, and acupunturist and all said it was a groin pull, tilted pelvis and muscle pull. Fast forward 3 years later - many rounds of steroids my right hip has avasular necrosis ( no blood getting to it) still pain and now I need a new one-- can barely walk, get pain from knee up to hip- takes your breathe away

put on remi in August but no relief-- 2 cortizone shots into hip helped but any humidity and I am crippled

on: celebrex, sulfasalazine, hydrocodone, remi every 6 weeks ( just doubled the dose) flexorall for spasms, cymbalta for pain. flax oil, calcium , b12 shots, bromelien, and vit d

Do not ignore your hip pain- get an xray and see a specialist

I am trying to get away from my Rhumi who just wants to give me more meds-- I'm going to see ortho on my own-- my goall is to get off remi-- if not working why take it?? and after surgery try to go holistic with more supplements-- any ideas???? please send any suggestions

Beware of those Sore Hips

Hello fellow Crohnies

After 3 years since my initial diagnosis of Crohns/ a bowel resection and 2 hospital stays my 47 year o;d body feels like a 70 year old woman.. I have been complaining of chronic hip pain for 3 years and was told it was arthritis-- I bit the bullet and started Remicaide after a year debate w/ my GI and Rhemu. Long story short- started Remi in June-- still painful joints-- told it will take a while to get results by christmas I had no crohns symptoms but pain getting worse so Rhemi ( where I get my infusions) decide to give me a steroid injection into r- hip no avail. Next infusion my knees had swollen and I was in extreme pain-- weather was very damp and killing me- rhemi gave me steroid in swollen knee - took xray and said I needed synvisc for deteriorating cartlidge in my patella- ok whatever-- well pain in hip was so bad I could barely get up the stairs at work ( I am a teacher and have classes on 2 different floors) So I decided to go to an ortho to see what was wrong with my hip -- It was abit too late for me-- it seems I have AVN in my right hip and it had collapsed-- probably from overuse of steroids completing 2 courses of 60 mgs- to 0 when first diagnosed and another after 2nd hopsitalization.. Anyway-- check you aches and joint pains with other doctors since I now need a total hip replacement on right and a core decompression on the left.. The ortho couldn't believe how bad the collapse was and I was immediately written out of work w surgery in 3 weeks.. So beware of over use of the steroids -- I had no idea just how much damage they could cause. I am now going med free and will see how life goes after the surgery but I can never take steroids again and I won't take remiacaide either my goal is to go as organic and natural as possible-- any suggestions???

In the words of Crohnsnewbie, "When my hips hurt they HURT!" Yup. I've had hip pain since I was 22. Intermittent, but still a pain in the.... hip.

I recently got diagnosed with sacroilitis, which is arthritis in the pelvic to hip joint on both sides.... I'm waiting for an MRI, to find out how bad the damage is, until them I'm just getting painmeds like oxycodone... When I was so remicade it also helped on my hip pain, and now when I'm on humira it doesn't work at all...

I tried metrotroxat and salazopyrin with no luck... So for now, I can just wait...
Mine also started with shooting hip pain espeacilly under pressure...

Stephy Chelle, the world is not coming to an end... I don't think. I am about your age, I have SI joint arthritis and sacroiliitis (brought on by Crohn's) AND 2 herniated L-discs (from athletic injuries). Awesome. I do everything in my power to stay active, so here's a few suggestions I hope they help:

1. Keep active with low impact activity like walking, elliptical, bicycling. It increases your hip mobility and keeps blood flowing through the area, which should help combat inflammation.

2. Stay strong and flexible in the hip/back region. The two areas go hand in hand. Lower back and hip strengthening and stretching regimens can be found on-line. Learn about using a yoga block for passive stretching - it can work wonders. Keeping your core strong can also keep pressure off your hips.

3. Keep your Crohn's under control. Crohn's and arthritis are negative reactions by the body to inflammation. Keeping inflammation down will help keep your symptoms down. For the arthritis this should lead to lower pain levels. Some people swear by low-inflammation diets, and consume foods that are supposed to help fight inflammation. It's really trial and error by you the individual, but any effort helps.

The biggest thing is to stay positive. Arthritis is not a death sentence. Unfortunately it's uncomfortable.. often, but there's measures you can take to help combat it and keep the lifestyle you want.
