How long after a barium enema until a bowel movement?

Before Grace had hers today they said she will have tp go poo right away.
Had it and sent us into the bathroom and waited and waited and waited.
Nothing!!!!
They gave us pads to put under her for the car ride home because they said it will come soon and make a big mess in the car. 3 hrs. ride and.......
Nothing!!!

We're home and still nothing, just Grace having slight belly pains.

"What should you do after the exam?
After the study, it is important to mildly increase your child's fluid intake for the day, because the barium may cause constipation.
If there are any problems or questions about constipation please call your Primary Care Physician.
When your child does have a bowel movement, it may appear white or grayish — do not be alarmed! The barium may cause this discoloration."

I know for me I went immediately after it was over but not all of it came out and would still be letting some out up to a few days after the test. The test itself is a bit traumatizing (hope she did ok, maybe I was just a big baby, or maybe the test has improved since then) so maybe she's having a hard time just letting it out. You're forced to hold it during the test so her body may simply sticking with holding it in. Definitely increase fluids though as mentioned if you haven't already. Keep us posted on how she's doing. :)

Sorry no idea either - hope she manages to go! I agree with increasing fluids. I always thought barium was quite constipating, but it might be a different test than the one I'm thinking of.

Grace has gone but still has not clean out.:shifty:
Our GI nurse also said keep up on liquids and we're doing liquid diet for the week-end.
She keeps trying to poo but she starting to have problems.

We're going to a big corn maze today, so hopefully the exercise will help her.

:well: Hope things are travelling along okay with Grace hun...

That barium is god awful stuff...:voodoo:...I hope she is continuing to have her bowels open and as has been said, it can take a few days to completely clear the system.

Won't even go into getting it to flush away! Just have a big stick next to the toilet so you can beat it down!

Stick, got it! Thanks!

Yes she's going but just liquid. No solids yet.

She seems happy the last few days. We'll see what the future holds.
