Good Afternoon everyone!
I’m having a difficult day. A few weeks ago I did blood work for my GI, just regular appt blood work. My white blood cell count was off, in the past it’s been off before but then goes back to normal. So this time my GI said he was sending me to a hematologist to make sure it’s noting more. So I spoke to the hemotologist yesterday and he’s sending me for a big blood work and won’t have the results for a few months. So now I have to sit around and wait a few months to know if it’s anything serious. My GI said if it was anything serious then the levels would keep dropping but they aren’t. So then why send me for this extra blood work at all. Has anyone had to do this? My nerves are shot!

I don’t know your situation but if things are really serious they don’t wait for months ….for results
They just don’t
Now if you developed an “extra “ as we call them for ds
“Extra “ disease,extra symptom etc…
But are stable medically
Then they tend to wait around for longer test results

For example a few years ago a 2 cm lymph node appeared over night on my kiddos neck
Lots of rush bloodwork.
Then a lull for a week or two
Then it grew rapidly again -so quick admit and removal /biopsy
At that point they knew it wasn’t anything scary so they were willing to wait the three months to see if it was from infection, crohns or something else minor
Annoying to wait but they had knee Ds was stable
Turns out just crohns (granulomas in it )

So please try not to worry until the docs get that worried face -rush to the hospital do not wait instructions….

Hugs
Do something for yourself -self care is important
We all have rough days

Thank you for the reply. I guess I’m worried because I start to worry why would the WBC be off? What’s the reason.

I think every lab has different reference ranges?

It's more like every test manufactuer has its own reference ranges. FDA requires test makers to each run their own studies to define the reference range. The various studies usually come out close to each other but can be a little off depending on the small differences in the study designs and/or study populations.

So depending on which commercial test the laboratory buys, the reference range can vary somewhat. If they don't buy a commercial test but develop their own then, like the manufacturers, they must run their own reference range clinical trial.

In fact, a decrease in the level of leukocytes in most cases is not as bad as you think. The first thing you need to do is balance your diet. Also, for your anxiety, it will not be superfluous to add some well-functioning calming tea.
