Best strains for Crohn's?

Hi everyone,

I recently started MM treatment for my Crohn's (which is currently in remission). Though I live in a non-legal state, I was lucky enough to meet someone who grows different strains specifically for medical purposes. He had a few suggestions but didn't know much about IBD.

What strains are working best for everyone here? I've tried a few, but the only one I can tolerate often is Durban Poison because it's very mild for me and doesn't impair me at all. I've heard indicas are better, but I would be stone cold out! I'd like to stick with a sativa, unless I was only taking it at night.

Also, in your opinion, how often does it need to be inhaled/ingested to be effective? Because I am in remission now and feeling pretty great I don't really need it for pain relief or nausea, per se... More for the anti-inflammatory properties and the lessening of D (even though I am clinically in remission, I've had my terminal ileum and gallbladder removed, so sometimes I still deal with non-painful D). How often are you guys 'par-taking'? Does it get easier to manage the high so that it doesn't feel like you have to take time out of real life? I have too much to do to be couch locked all the time ;)

Thanks for your help and for letting me join!

Kristy

Hi Kristy, and welcome! I enjoy sativas as well, particularly Jack Herer. I find it gives me relief from nausea, without the 'couchlock' you speak of. I can still function. I will use indica-heavy strains if it is late at night and I'm having trouble sleeping. I'm sure everyone has their own personal preferences, and there are strains out there I haven't tried...

As far as how often it should be used to be effective - I'm not sure, I just use as needed. Sometimes, that means every day, sometimes it's a couple of times a week. Depends how I am feeling.

Good luck to you and I hope you continue feeling well!

I tend to use a heavy indica strain. I smoke just before going to bed, I also have insomnia so it helps a great deal.

I try to smoke every night unless I've been drinking, I'm a fan of Purple Kush, AK-47 and recently Rock Star Kush.

Any strain will help, however indicas tend to have less THC and more of the other cannabids, so overall they help more, but any cannabis helps.

I find indicas to be most beneficial overall, but I stick with a sativa if I need to be more lucid. As for how often, that varies from person to person. I've heard of people smoking once and that helps for a few days, and, personally, I need to smoke multiple times (4-6) per day to keep symptoms in check.

I credit cannabis with saving my life most likely

I was diagnosed with crohns at the age of 26, at the time I used cannabis on and off for pleasure. I stopped this due my GI doctors warnings that it would be bad for me. After stopping using it the disease really flared up. Within
2 years my quality of life was so bad I didn't care if I lived or died so I stopped taking the doctors meds and started to smoke daily. Within one month all internal bleeding had stopped and hasn't returned for 25 years. I've used a very high dose of cannabis since then and though I'm not symptom free I've never been nearly as ill as I was when I stopped using marijuana. I came close to bleeding out on the floor before I started to use cannabis again.
I also developed an anal fistuala during the 2 years without cannabis.
It eventually healed also. I've primarily used cannabis for relief for 25 years now and think it definitely has greatly improved my quality of life as well
as perhaps saving my life.

Indica's provide the most relief for me. Once you become accustomed to them drowsiness shouldn't be a problem.

Chem Dog is also a very good strain..something that kills the pain and reduces overall inflammation..I had my 2nd colonoscopy done and it showed less inflammed ares and only patchy so good news there.

I have to agree with everyone on here. I will add that strains with a lower thc content usually have a higher cbd content. Mostly sativas, although northern lights and sour desiel seem to work well for my bf. Cbd's are what helps crohns suffers with pain and digestion. I do believe smoking mmj can make a big difference but actually digesting the cannibis will be more effective. Cannabutter and oil are easy to make and can be substituted into any recipe. I have Also found that glycerin cannabis tincture works wonders. Pm if you need more info. I will start a thread tmrw. (cannabannana bread is amazing)

Hahaha. Correction. Indica strains have a higher cbd content. Not sativas. It's too late for me to be up and typing. Lol

I haven't so much as found a "strain" that helps more or less specifically for chrones unless your having problems with nausua . What have found that works is to do hash oil orally or potent edibles . They make 175mg candies out here that are great . Smoking is actually the worst way to treat chrones depending on how bad off you are . Just as ciggarettes leave a tar that finds its way down your throat MJ does it just as bad . Edibles or vaping are the safest less irritable way to administer . I'm in a med state and have been treating myself for a few years now avoiding another surgery .

Smoking, Edibles, Vaping..I find all three to be beneficial to me..Smoking it doesn't bother me. As I know they say smoking or inhaling anything like that usually isn't good for crohn's.

It's tough to say what strains work well because most strains now-a-days are crossed with so many other strains that almost all types are mutts instead of pure breeds. Like Terry I ingest and smoke and find both help in different ways. Smoking gives me instant relief but just recently I started taking hash oil and ingesting it 3 times a day. I'm hoping this reduces the inflammation internally. I'm only on week 3 but I've decided to give it a full 3 months before I decide whether ingesting is actually healing me.

I use indica's, I also am grower, this years grow is the best so far, I have O.G. Kush x burmese kush= buku kush, heavy indica, works best for me, I can't take sativa, to much for my brain, I also have sour diesel with og mix will make really nice hybrid, I tried some already, and too strong for me, makes my head think too much. but I need cd med's currently on 10mg of pred, asacol and imuran, anxiety meds and sleeping meds, plus mmj

I get weird reactions from taking some sativas so I don't put my hands on them.

OG kush seems to be the best for relieving pain for me. I'd love to try some blueberry kush but can't get any of it in the East coast for some reason.

But I'm a newb so I don't know much.

yeaa, I'm on ssdi, mostly because of short bowel syndrome and it's effects in public, but we havre art biz, and it's all in my wife's name so I do what I can do, but I find indica's are the only thing I will smole, I wouldn't smoke if all there was, was sativa's. I have very good indica's, but i'm legal, I have some extra for some ill people, so that is kinda nice, I find it helps with my sleep and for gaining weight, but for actually helping in my CD only time will tell, maybe the weight gain is a way that it has helped my cd and given me some strength, but when it comes to bringing down inflammation, i'm so far a non-believer on that. but if your finnancially secure, it help in anxiety and depression, but when things are tough, it can bring on anxiety. so it definetly is situational when using it.

Sativa. The old-fashioned kind that is not "enhanced". Smoke it through a vaporiser, don't mix with tobacco. That way you have no cough, keep your wits, but just get the anti-inflammatory relief and relaxation. I "smoke" it every day, there again I don't drink, smoke cigs or do any other kind of non-prescription drug. Take a little before and again after evening meal. The worst effect is that you are able to tolerate stupid films on the TV that otherwise you would switch off. The best thing for me was being able to eat when I was undiagnosed and otherwise there was no joy in food whatever.

I dont know what this stuff is..I got today..I always peel the labels off..and now I forgot..lol..damn short-term or whatever memory loss hahahah. but it is really GREEN and even the stems are equally green as much as the bud..its the most greenest bud I ever did have I tell you that, and it is some kick-ass herb.

Guys there is an actual strain for crohn's I only tried it for about a month but I STARTED GAINING WEIGHT AND my appetite went through the roof even when I wasn't high I wanted to eat like crazy and generally felt better I only had enough for a month but I'm waiting to get my hands on more but google cannatonic for crohn's and theres heaps of info it's a hybrid 50/50 indica sativa but has heaps of cbd's thats what we need but yeah this is a strain made for inflamitory diseases

yeah google canatonic and there is a place in canada that sells seeds I imported some into australia I can't remember the web adress but its a seed bank from canada

I find during the day I'll usually smoke a sativa works best as it doesn't burn me out. I mostly use indica at night since its heavier and find it easier to fall asleep

I like to switch up strains If I stick to just one I find it loses it's effectiveness

I got some of this stuff called "Pez" just as the name implies its a sweet/piney tasting herb. works excellent for pain and cramping and gives you one hell of a long lasting high!
