Bile salts or bacteria overgrowth!

Hi all so at the min I'm sitting back in hospital getting an magnesium infusion( only four hours to go!) my magnesium level was down to 0.33 so have been summoned for a top up. My surgeon seems to think the high output could be caused by bile salts or bacteria overgrowth, as anyone dealt with this? He is going to let the medical man see what he can do but he also mentioned the possibility of sub cut fluids at home, wish they could sort it out and maybe I'll get some peace. Hope everyone is well.

Ergh! I wish they would figure out what to do with your Big Truck bowel that likes to rev too high! (please dont take that badly)

I would think a serious nutricion nurse that is familiar with us folks with a bag, but I dont know that such nurse/dietician exists. (I cant type, I'm on major cold medicine so excuse me)

I think with your output that sub cut fluids arent a bad idea. They just need to figure out what is going to stop it! Yeah...fiber, and good luck with that, but you could try psyllum husks? (cant spell it now)

Oh that's really interesting that you posted this today as earlier today I was waiting to see my GI and was reading the lasted stoma group newsletter. There was an article written by a patient with an colostomy due to colon cancer and their ileum had been damaged by radiotherapy and they can no longer extract bile back into the body.

They had high output and lots of acid reflux. The dr firstly did a breath test to see if there was any bacterial problems along with a gastroscopy. When they came back negative, they had a SeHCAT scan and was diagnosed with Bile Acid Malabsorption as mentioned above.

To treat it, they were put on a very low fat diet. Fat needs bile to digest it, so the less fat you eat, the less is produced. Apparently they are much better now they are following the diet!
