can anyone tell me how long it takes to get biopsy results back from endoscopy, and colonscopy? i just had this done and waiting for my results.

Depends what country you are in, Can a few weeks or next Gi appt. US I heard about a week, I know it is hard to wait but ya gotta ;). Let us know how it turns out ok>

I'm in the U.S. and my GI usually gets the results back from the lab in a week or less. You can call your doctor's office to ask when the results will be in - they should be able to give you a good estimate on timing.

I work in Anatomic Pathology as a Lab Tech, in Canada.

The day the biopsey is taken it is sent to the lab for proccessing.
Processing takes overnight.
The next day it should be read by a pathologist. He dictates the report which should be typed the same day. In our lab, the reports finalized today, print out at midnight and are distributed to the doctors office the following day.
So approx 2-3 day from time of sampling a report is available for routine specimens. Add a few extra days if further testing is required before the pathologist can make a diagnosis. Also add a 2 days if your biopsey was on a Friday as most histology labs are closed for the weekend.
So the report should not really take more than the one week.

I have no idea why this process would take 3-4 weeks in the UK unless they are drasctically understaffed and have a back-up of specimens or send all the specimens to one regional center. Maybe someone from there can illuminate us?

NHS, alot of patients in the queue and fixed lab resources is the answer to that I think!

Had 3 scopes over 4 years and the time frame was the same each time.

I had a colonoscopy in July, the next appointment with my doctor was 8 weeks later in September...he said they still didn't have my biopsy results! NHS can be quite slow!

Biopsy results in the uk are generally available within a week. The getting of the results is what takes longer. Just get your gp to ring the appropriate lab. Job done. No wait. Or consultants secretary will get the results if the gp rings. I've never had to wait weeks...perhaps I've just been lucky.

I think if a doc says not available after 8 weeks he/she just can't be bothered to chase the results...or they are a super specialised test that has to be sent away to a specialist centre for specialised processing and analysis.

I've rung my consultant after 3 weeks before and they've not been sent back from the lab yet. No-one has ever offered to ring the lab for me, I doubt they would until at least 4 weeks had passed honestly, the general consensus seems to be "it takes time".

Normal priority is 3-6 weeks, but if they suspect cancer they are rushed through. Everyone else has to just get in line!

I agree with littlemish, your Dr should be chasing now after such a long time, that is poor patient care.

I got told that often other people results need to be rushed through which apparently delays everyone else's....

I then asked the doctor how long theyd be again and he just said 'oh i wouldn't bother worrying about the biopsies, they're only going to show you have crohns anyway' - why take them from me in the first place then?!

my biopsy results came back from the colonscopy and small bowell follow thru they are normal. i havent gotten the results of the endoscope biopsy results yet, they are checking me for celiac since i had the celiac gene come back postive. they also want me to have a stomach ct scan..

Artificial, i literally laughed-out-loud when you posted what your doctor said...haha people are ridiculous.

Jenny, did you ask about the endoscopy results when they let you know about the colonoscopy?

Had my last endoscopy in late June, got the results last Thursday (early October) I just stuck my head in the sand and thought if they are not calling you back it must be OK lol !
ps. the doc said it was all clear.

no since the endoscopy was done a week later then the colonscopy they didnt have biopsy results back when he sent me a letter about the colonscopy and small bowell follow thru results. i am going to call them today about endoscope biopsy, i am still having diarrhea and losing weight still.. sigh

update. my biopsy results from endoscope were fine. no celiac disease. so i dont know what is wrong with me yet and i continue to have diarrhea. i am starting to think that maybe i have ibs or something else. the doc has ordered me to have a ct scan of the stomach. i am getting so deppressed because i continue to have diarrhea and weight loss and they cant figure out why...

hey, Jenny. i don't have the same symptoms as you, but i kinda know how you feel right now. you know something's up but you have no answer!! plus, for you, it took wayyy too long to get the biopsy results..at least you can rule out Celiac and your doctor is willing to search for more possibilities...

you got this, girl!! keep us updated!

yes i know it took him forever for the biopsy results, but i really like my doc he is very through and investigates everything.
