I know it's a fact birth control thickens your blood and can cause clots.....but I recently heard having Crohn's makes your blood thicker also. Should I stop birth control? I'm on birth control only because I have heavy periods and long ones! I almost bled to death when I was 12 because of my period gushing all over the ground literally. Periods use to last 10-12 days now it's down to 7 days but I still have heavy days even on my period. What should I do so I don't have more risks for blood clots? :eek2:

use to go through 100 pads a period, now I go through around 24-38 pads...

Hum... I don't know if you have a higher risk that is associated with crohn's itself. You may want to consider alternative birth control or progestogen-only pill. Check with your gyne for methods like Mirena, Implanon, Depoprovera, or Micronor pills. These are the one that have been recommended to me since I had vascular issues as a teenager so "normal" birth controls have always been out of question for me. They help with period in general, they either stop or reduce the period. You may want to look them on the internet and with your doctor.

You're right-higher risk due to Crohn's and higher risk due to bcp. I'm on them, too (and I smoke). I need to quit smoking, but I won't quit bcp. They keep my endometriosis in check.

Check the leaflet Inside your pill packet carefully, mine (microgynon) does specifically say not to be taken by Crohn's patients. But I have stopped smoking and don't have any other risk factors, I just have to be careful on flights or in hospital they gave me those injections to reduce the risk while I was laid up.

I threw the leaflets away for my sprintec $9 birth control because I never thought I'd have a disease. Well I should be able to get another one when I get a refill next month. Next appointment is March or April. I could be putting myself at risk and the doctors said there's nothing wrong with me taking birth control??? AAAAAA glad I'm looking into this myself. Too bad my appointment is in April......and if I don't have dissability by then I can't afford the appointment.....

What you need is the progesterone only pill which is also known as the "mini pill". This is the pill suitable for women who are at increased risk of clots and shouldn't take the combined pill.

The mini-pill vastly reduces the chance of clots where as the combined pill increases it.
