Hi everyone :) I'm new here but i've had crohn's for 3 and a half years now. I've been on Humira since February this year and it was going well but i started to get unwell again so I started on some prednisone. It has been about a week and a half and blood is literally dripping out the last two times i went to the toilet. The toilet water is bright red. Has anyone experienced that problem before? There isn't really much pain, except a little constipation.

Hi, Samia. Welcome to the forum. :)

Personally, I haven't experienced this, but I did want to offer some support. Can you contact your GI? If not, and you begin to experience any new symptoms, or any symptoms of blood loss / anemia, (fatigue, dizziness, weakness, confusion, pale skin, shortness of breath, etc.) I encourage you to go to the hospital.

Were you having any bleeding before?

I wasn't experiencing bleeding before I got on the prednisone. Thank you for your reply :) crohns disease always fills you with constant worry. I'm not experiencing any other symptoms

Samia,

Blood is a common symptom of Crohns colitis. Your prednisone should start working soon and help. cortifoam is a topical and has no side effects.
You will need to start taking iron right away, but call your GI right away!
(our GI told our daughter to eat lean red meat 5 times a week when she was bleeding)

When was your last colonoscopy? Or MRE? Hopefully they will get you right in to see what is going on.

With blood loss like that I always went to the ER. For me blood loss like that was a sign that I was in a bad flare. I don't recall having any other symptoms either except for diarrhea (yet some members have constipation). You need testing done to find out what's causing the bleeding (inflammation, ulcers, fissure etc) and have blood work done to make sure you aren't loosing too much blood. If nothing else you do need to contact your GI right away and let them know. There should be someone on call for after hours emergencies. They should be able to tell you if you should go to the ER right away. Keep us posted. :)

Jennifer, any chance that this is a fissure or a hemmoroid? This can happen with a difficult BM. I know that it has happen to me numerous times over the years. Bright red blood in the stool means it's occuring at or near the anus.

Best of Luck

Bright red bleeding can come from much higher up, even past the ileum. I had bright red bleeding from my terminal ileum. A fissure or hemorrhoid is also possible so it would be best to be seen to rule out these possibilities rather than assume its either when it could be something more serious. Getting a rectal exam is a start to rule out hemorrhoids. Either way you have to stay on top of significant blood loss and be seen quickly.

My doctor made me take a blood test to check my hemoglobin. Hopefully all is well :) they said it's nothing too serious.

I mean where in your digestive tract?

Edit: Also what's causing the bleeding? Did your GI give you any idea?

Do you know where your Crohn's was affecting you in the past? When was your last colonoscopy?

I agree, but....she stated that she was constipated, so I'm thinking end of the line.

As always one must consult their doctor. Hey, I'm only a plumber;) Wait, it's the same thing as the GI tract!;))

Jennifer and Mike: that is one of the reasons why I love this site. We learn so much from each other.

I had not mentioned earlier either one of the possiblities you both added. It is good for me to see what else bleeding could be. My own daughter has bled so much in the past but so far it has been Crohns Colitis.

Samia: It would be good for you to get copies of all your results if possible.
We all hope the very best for you. Please keep us informed of where the source of the bleeding is if they have found out.
