Received some recent blood test results and looking for feedback about following:

Vitamin B12 came back at 165, with normal range for lab stated as 150-650 pmol/L

Ferritin is 46 and says "Probable Iron Deficiency" beside it.

All my red cell lines are normal, but MCV, hematocrit, and MCH are right on the border of being high, which I read, when coupled with borderline low B12 level, could point to a B12 deficiency that is in process of developing.

I am curious if anyone else has experienced similar results and if so, did you have further testing for it? Are there any other blood tests I should be asking about for b12 ? I could be misunderstanding the whole borderline B12 thing as well.

Are your doctors recommending b12 and/or iron supplementation? I don't know of any better tests, but if you supplement you can certainly re-test to see where you are at.

Hello nogutsnoglory, thank you for taking the time to respond :) I have not seen the doctor yet, still on wait list for GI doctor, but did get copy of results so figured would do some checking while I wait and am considering going back to the naturopath I was getting b12 shots from a few months ago to see if it helps any to resume b12 injections.

Well your b12 is within the normal range but still in the lower end. I would personally still try to raise it a bit as I like to be in the middle of normal ranges. Even with these ranges considered normal, health issues can arise for those too deficient or too high in a certain vitamin or nutrient.

Are you unable to absorb b12 from food or liquid supplement? Maybe you can avoid the shots since you aren't very depleted but want to raise it a bit.

Thank you again for the reply nogutsnoglory :) I was thinking of getting the injections again because I've been taking a Multi B complex vitamin already and thought that an injection would maybe bring my levels up faster then the pills. I'm a bit desperate to feel better and trying anything I can think of that might help while waiting for an appointment. Planning to go to Heath store this weekend to speak with them a bit about the one I already take and check out some other supplements too.
