Hi All
I wondered if anyone has tried using Boswellia ? It is an Ayurvedic remedy made from gum resin, also known as frankincense.
It contains a number of anti inflammatory substances including boswellic acids which appear to be as effective as some non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. Boswellia works by inhibiting the production of 5-lipoxygenase, interleukins & TNF-alpha.
In a study of 87 people with Crohn's, 44 were treated with Boswellia and 39 with mesalazine. The symptoms score for those taking Boswellia reduced by 90 points, compared with an average reduction of 53 points for those taking mesalazine, which suggests Bowellia can be at least as effective as standard drug treatment.
Several trials have been done using Boswellia to treat UC, and the evidence showed it was at least as effective, if not more so, than standard drug treatment.
