Hello everyone :) I've been so bad about being around here lately. That little one of mine sure keeps me on my toes all of the time!

If you have a resection of the terminal ileum, do you usually end up with a temporary bag?? This is my fear. I'm just curious if it happens often or all of the time or not at all!

Hi there and what a little cutie!! I have recently had a resection for a stricture and before hand the surgeon went through all the potential risks of infection etc and did mention that if things were worse than first thought I might have to have a bag but there was a very slim chnce of this. The op went exactly as planned and no bag required :) I think it all depends on what kind of mess the bowel is in.

Hey Amanda! :bigwave:

Well you would know my kiddos didn't. Sarah's was emergency surgery and she didn't end up with one and Matt's was planned and he didn't either. :)

They can never give you a complete guarantee that you won't, they just never really know what they will find when they get in there, but I would say most people don't end up with one.

It very much depends on what they are doing it for. Say it was for scarring and/or chronic settled inflammation with or without complications (fistula, abscess), then there is a very high chance that you won't have one. If on the other hand the inflammation is acute and extensive then the chances are higher that you will have one because they will want to preserve as much bowel as possible. To do that they need to do a temp stoma because you can't join two inflamed endings together and it also gives time for the inflammation to settle from acute to chronic before they reverse it.

I can't help but smile every time I see that photo of Sadie, she is such a cutie!

Dusty.

Thanks guys!! I figured that's how it would go. I knew that if they got in there and there was a bigger mess than anticipated I might end up with a temp one. Either way it will be fine! I was just curious. I just really need to get it done now. I've been so sick and its just not getting any better. I want to get to feeling well so I can, well, be well!

@Dusty.. she makes me smile too!!! I need to get an updated picture of her. Can't believe it but she's 8 months old now and is cuter than ever! :) You should hear the laugh she does, oh my!! So sweet!

Are Matt and roo doing well?

Hi the surgeon told me it was roughly 4% of which the majority would be reversible, he also told me it can be the case if after you have the surgery your anastomsis leaks and you have to have further surgery to repair this you might end up with one, but as everyone else has said it depends on the state of the bits they are reattaching. Having a bag was one of my biggest concerns that's why they all urged me to have surgery while I was feeling good and not to wait til it was an emergency. I'm great since my surgery a yr ago so good luck

There is a chance but I think it's really unlikely. Although I'm sure like everything else that's very individual. I was quoted less than 1% chance.

I hope if/when you do it it goes very well for you.

Sarah is still powering along and is never far from her soap box these days!

Matt is also doing really well, just need to get his Vit D sorted and we're laughing!

Thanks for asking hun,

Hi, I'm getting a bowel resection and it includes terminal ileum. I asked my doc if I'm getting a stoma or a j-pouch and he said neither. :) Of course complications are a different story but what I understood was that if everything goes well, no stoma or j-pouch will be needed. Are you facing surgery in the future?

Your daughter is a cutie pie! Makes me wanna squeeze those cheeks! They're so darn cute when they're in that age. Oh the days...

Hi ManzyB , when I had my resection they said there was a possibility of a stoma but they would not know till the opened me up. Sounds as though they say that to everyone .Hope that it all goes well .

Hi Angrybird , saw you are from Cambridge me too ! Just being nosey and was wondering did you have your resection done at Addenbrookes ? who was your surgeon ? mine was mr Hardwick .

Same here. They mentioned there was a chance (but I don't recall the exact #, making me think it was that small I dismissed it), but I came thru without one. Like pretty much everything else in life, its a roll of the dice (please note how I restrained myself and didn't call it a crap shoot).

Thanks everyone :) I was really curious just to see how many people had ended up with one. I know there's always a chance.

I don't have an appointment yet for the surgery. I see my GI on Thursday. A few months ago he wanted me to try Cimzia and see if it worked. He (and 2 other doctors) agree that I need to have the resection, he was just hopeful that Cimzia would help. He mentioned me taking Tysabri, but 2 other docs have told me that nothing will help me out really well until all the scar tissue is cleaned out of there. I'm hoping he just lets me go ahead and get it done before I get much worse. My husband is in the Marine Corps and right now we are so close to home it would be nice to have the extra help. We're moving again in 6 months, so I'd like to get it, be healed up and feeling better by then.

It's getting harder and harder to keep up with the little one right now. I really need something to help me... and soon!

Hi there, yes it was done at Addenbrookes, my surgeon was Miss Fearnhead, in fact I'm due to see her tomorrow for a check up. My consultant is Dr Middleton, are you also seen by the Addenbrookes team?

I assume you go to Clinic 12? I think the staff nurse Geraldine is fabulous, she is the slightly older, irish nurse. She always has a quick chat when I arrive and I like that despite how many people she sees she remembers who I am and what has been going on with me.

Yeah i have seen her, she is always very friendly but never actually spoken to her. Dealt with sister Nightingale (what a great name for a nurse)who is always very friendly too.

Had my Resection done without a bag at addenbrookes, surgeon was Richard Miller and my GI is Dr Parkes also. Great team!

Hi spiceman, good to see another local on the forum :) FYI Miss Fernhead was very pleased with my incisions and thought the scars looked excellent. Will be seeing Dr Middleton tomorrow for my colonoscopy.

Hi spiceman, seems to be quite a few of us from addenbrookes on here, fingers crossed we are in good hands !

Angrybird , hope all goes well with the colonoscopy , guess you must be enjoying the prep this evening !
