I have had Crohns my whole life. Diagnosed 12 years ago. Been about a year to a year and a half in between hospital stays since diagnosis. These always involve high dose Solumedral, followed by tapering for months on Prednisone. Was diagnosed 8 years ago with Osteoporosis.
Anyway I have been biking a lot for the last few years. Racing, trails, etc. Went for a ride to get a haircut last month, hit a broken utility box cover, over the bars. Instant broken elbow and emergency surgery. They put me on IV antibiotics because of the surgery and nature of the fracture. For some reason antibiotics typically flare me up, almost immediately.
So onto this last week. Nothing but sandy diarrhea with bleeding. Distention of my abdomen, definitely a big flare coming on. Went to see the GI this last week. She has me up to 40mg Prednisone at home. I was very reluctant to do this with a healing fracture but my surgeon said it was safe.
The GI said that I will finally be allowed Humira this week. I responded well to Remicade, but developed an allergic reaction on the 3rd infusion.
So I was wondering two things. First, have any of you had any luck maintaining remission with Humira alone over past steroid use? And second, after the steroid use, were you able to reverse the osteoporosis? And if it is relevant, I am 37 and very active. But my digestion sucks...don't retain much of my vitamins I'd imagine by way of always diarrhea and lots of trips to the bathroom per day.
