Hi need some help please!!
Started Aza 2weeks ago.. only on 25mg to start but the problem is a week in i got a throat infection so was put on an antibiotic now 2 weeks in ive got a chest infection saw the doctor today who said my pulse is too quick and blood pressure low which means the infection is getting worse (even though on original antibiotic) ive now been prescribed co-amoxiclav and doctor said that if pulse is over 90 still by tonight (currently at 130) and / or i get temperature / feel worse to get to hospital. ive only just come out of hospital after spending a week on a hydrocortisone drip so don't fancy going back!
My question is .. is the Aza causing these infections? My 1st blood test showed high white blood cell count (due to the infection) and result from 2nd week blood test due tomorrow but my guess is it will show the same. surely this cannot be coincedence??
Bit of med background im on 45mg prednisolone, 2mg pentasa and aza.
Any help is always appreciated thank you x

If you are dehydrated your pulse will also go high. If you have the big D it could be from that, but all together the symptoms say infection.

Both the Prednisolone and Azathioprine are immune suppressants so they certainly can and do make anyone more susceptable to any infection.

I am surprised he did not take you off of the Aza if you have a serious infection. They took me off of it because of an upcoming surgery just to prevent a post op infection.

Sorry you are going through this! I think it is more likely the steroids at this point. 25mg of Imuran is next to nothing and you have not been on it long enough to truly suppress immune system. Good luck, hope you can stick it out. Has been a miracle drug for me.

I can not tolerate Imuran. It landed in the hospital after 3weeks of treatment. I got very sick from it (flu-like) then it attacked my pancreas...hate that drug!!

Thank you for all your replies! gi agreed that was more likely to be the pred making me sick. however i took my first full dose (150mg) of aza last night.. up from 25mg.. and within an hour i was violently vomiting it got to the point where it was burning my oesophagus still burning today. Cant speak to gi until Monday so think Im going to stop taking it until then. it was literally the WORST nausea and sickness ever! i really hope they can advise something to help this as i want the aza to work!!!
