Can a colonoscopy not find evidence if in remission

Just wondered if anyone has experience with this. I have all the symptoms of Crohn's and have been dealing with it for about 10 months.

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy which found nothing. All the biopsies came back negative.

During the time I had the colonoscopy I wasn't experiencing any symptoms for about a month beforehand.

My symptoms have come back very strong and it's really hard to manage day to day. Blood tests are fine, but currently waiting on stool test results.

My question is if a colonoscopy could miss diagnosing Crohn's if the patient is in remission during the procedure? Again I had biopsies and they came back fine.

Are you on meds for it? I had a scope in fen n came back 100% normal! though in jan I was in hospital w a flare up, the clean scope was likely due to remicade, though I still had some symptoms so was shocked it was so clean. Perhaps it's underlying ibs or food intolerances causing your symptoms? How's your diet?

I am not on meds for it.

I started bleeding in November of 2013, lasted about a month,
I started bleeding again in mid January 2014. Then it cleared up in February.
I had a colonoscopy in April and all came back okay.

In mid July 2014 it came back with heavy blood this time and nausea, rashes and mucusy stool. Still dealing with it now.

My diet is average. I'm 40 years old, slim. Never had any allergies or problems with any types of food. Could be ibs. Pretty confused. Hard to deal with.

Hi Ryan, I had my first colonoscopy 2 years ago & it was clear. No Crohn's! Yet I have been diagnosed by my GI with Perianal Crohn's. Prior to my colonoscopy & subsequent to my colonoscopy I have experienced episodes of severe daily diarrhea & mucus including nocturnal diarrhea. The resulting Crohn's manifestations were perianal abscesses & fistulas. I currently have three perianal fistulas which are treated with draining setons. My GI has recommended I start HUMIRA. I am due for my second colonoscopy in September. My recent blood work is also great. CRP is negiligble....I feel great. I'm anticipating a clear colonoscopy thinking I'm in a state of remission. It will be interesting to see what the results will be. I told my GI I will start the HUMIRA treatment ASAP dependent on the colonoscopy results...

Hi ryanp, with IBS you don't bleed so that makes IBD more likely.

Have you had any scans such as MRI/CT, capsule endoscopy or barium x-ray?

Both scopes only peek into either end of a very long small bowel. Crohn's can occur from mouth to anus so it sounds to me like your small bowel hasn't been tested sufficiently to rule out IBD. Especially with the bleeding. Are you getting regular blood tests to check for anaemia?
