My two have never had perianal drains but their wound drains were pulled without any medication being used.

It sounds painful to just be pulled with nothing but I'm glad to know you don't need anesthesia for pulling it out.

Again, different drains but Sarah had two drains post op that for her were quite painful to pull. She was 14 at the time and after the fiasco they admited they should have done things differently, as in taken her IV down after they were pulled so they could have given her some IV Morphine. The staff from the surgical ward, Sarah was in paediatrics, said that abdominal drains were often more difficult to pull in children like Sarah due to very low body fat. Not sure about that as Matt was like a whippet to when he had his done and his experience was very different...

Matt had one drain that extended from the left side of his abdomen, just under the ribs, down to his RLQ. He had that removed about a week post op and although he said it felt strange and uncomfortable it wasn't painful as such.
