Can you tolerate puréed peas & beans?

I really want to find natural sources of iron since I don't eat red meat. I feel my body really craves puréed beans. I know I cannot handle the peel but im wondering if bean purée is safe? Aside from causing gas is it too heavy on the insides?

I can tolerate pureed beans just fine. I know beans cause gas for some folks, but I have no problem with them. Some of my favorites are black beans, garbonzos and black eyed peas. I've also found that adding a little oil such as olive or canola makes them taste better (kinda like southerners adding pork fat).

Have been scared to try anything with peas or beans - such as garbonzo.
Thought since we eat the entire thing (shell and all), its hard to digest. Havent given it a shot, so curious what most say to your thread as well.

Since my son isn't ready for beans yet, he has a green smoothie everyday, along with a glass of OJ, as vitamin C makes iron a lot more absorbable.

I steam 8 oz, fresh, organic, baby spinach or super greens for 5 to 10 minutes, blend with an avocado and enough water to make a 16 oz or so beverage.

I cook the spinach to make it easier to digest and to make the iron even more absorbable.

Peas are ok in any form.

Beans are a no no in any form, for me.

For iron, I'd suggest milk with cornflakes (en masse this really gets you a lot of iron in), supplements in dissolvable tablets (dissolved in a LOT of water) and well, no diarrhea.

I had navy beans that I strained and puréed and I did alright on it. I'd love to do sautéed spinach or even puréed but it seems to always hurt me.

If you add a little baking soda or seaweed to the beans while soaking/cooking, it will help decrease any gas you may get after. I also take a digestive enzyme before eating any, but still end up with gas and bloating.

I seem to do ok with peas, though while I've been reading about the diet I'll have to follow once I have an ileostomy, I've realised I'll be giving them up at least during the weeks following the operation, so they must be quite hard to digest since almost all the literature on post-ileostomy diets seems to advise against them. I can't do spinach either.

I have trouble with most kinds of beans, though green beans (runner beans) are ok. The ones I can't manage in their usual form, I can manage them in smooth soups. So while I can't have a can of soup that has whole beans in it, I can have tins of smooth bean soups (there's one I often has that has chick peas in), which I guess is much the same as having them pureed.

Is there any particular reason you want the iron to come naturally from food? Because I'd go with alex_chris's suggestion: I have breakfast cereals fortified with iron (most breakfast cereals are) - Cornflakes, Rice Krispies, Special K are all easy to digest and provide iron.

The more natural nutrition from food the better.

When are you getting your ileostomy? I was told very bland low fiber for 4 weeks post-op and then gradually introduce one food at a time.

So...I can eat peas if they are cooked REALLY soft. And I can have chickpeas from a ca, no problem; but I don't eat them unless they are from a can. I like to make hummus with them, because then the chickpeas are at least broken down a tiny bit. Any other kind of beans are a big no. Even if they are skinless, pureed, soup.... it just doesn't end well for me. That being said, IBD is so strange sometimes and effects everyone differently. Hopefully you'll be able to tolerate them amazingly.

In about 3 weeks. I can't remember the exact date but it's later this month.

UnXmas I have been reading up on this big time since I got mine 1 month ago. Let me know if I can be of help. It's a challenging adjustment but our stoma forum is great.
