I have an 8 year old son with crohn's (diagnosed 9 weeks ago)and we had some routine bloodwork done a few days ago so I requested that we get tested for Candida Albicans (bloodtest). Quest Diagnostics lab criteria is

<1.0 Antibody not detected
> or = 1.0 Antibody detection

the results are:

C. Albicans IGG 0.8 (in range)
C. Albicans IGA 2.2 (HIGH)
C. Albicans IGM 1.1 (HIGH)

I had read that if you are taking immunosuppresants that it's very likely that you may get a false negative on this test. He has been taking an immunosuppresant (6MP)for 8 weeks and he's still positive. I'm not extremely impressed so far with our current GI doc. I actually had this test ordered through our regular pediatrician so I'd like to know what you guys have to say about these test results. I know it's out of range but is this extremely high?
Thanks,
Berry

srry to hear about your son. my daughter is also on 6mp with abnormal blood results.. I am fairly new to this as well so I dont know the answer to your question but if you go to 'parents of kids with IBD forum' there are lots of experienced parents that will probably be able to help you. best of luck.

I do not have an answer either but wanted to thank you for this post. I would like to have my son tested for Candida Albicans too. I think it became a problem for him after 4 months of antibiotics. From my experience, it seems like main stream US doctors are not as concerned with Candida compared to 'alternative' doctors and the many internet sites. Please keep us updated. I hope your son is feeling better.

Did you get a response from your doctor yet?

Our GI said that he did not think the blood tests for Candida were helpful. (Stool testing or biopsy testing was thought to be more reliable.) But he did prescribe a 10-day dose of fluconazole for Danny. He has been on it for one week and it has not helped at all. It seems that Candida may not be causing Danny's problems.

I had B12 and Vit. D tested along with Candida. The B12 and Vit. D were fine. The pediatricians office called to tell me that the vit. D and B12 were fine, I then said what about the candida test? After being on hold about 1 minute she came back and said it looks good. I said it's out of range! She said well it just means that he has an immunity to yeast and has plenty of antibodies to fight it. The person calling was not a doctor or even an RN she was and LPN and obviously knows nothing about Candida tests. I emailed a DR. that deals with this type of testing for autistic children and she says that it means that he currently has a yeast problem. She also said that she prefers stool testing to blood tests. The town I live in is very small and we have to travel to Atlanta almost 5 hours away to see a pediatric GI. I may be the first person to ever request a candida test from our local pediatrician and they obviously have no clue about this kind of stuff, but she orders whatever tests I request. Our pediatric GI says that what he eats has nothing to do with crohn's, but from many crohn's sufferer's that I've talked to it has a lot to do with it.

A paleo diet works best for people with candida issues. Grains and sugars feed the yeast. A paleo diet is low in both. Extra virgin coconut oil and oil of oregano are both very antifungal. Watch for symptoms of yeast die off when trying to combat candida. It can leave you feeling really crummy. Lots of people feel worse before they feel better.
