Okay, so I go for a colonoscopy Friday. I'm terrified, to say the least of that, since I've never been put to sleep before. However, I have some basic questions in regards to what exactly my symptoms most likely point to. I'm hoping you guys can guide me a little better than I can.

- Frequent bowel issues. I've had this for almost ten years, and not until about two years ago did it cause me to start losing weight. Since about eight years ago I've been taking Immodium everyday to help regulate me so I'm not going so much.

- Over the last six months, I've been noticing joint pain. It started out in my elbows first, like when I would carry a gallon of milk for a few minutes, after I put it down I would feel a little swelling in the joint itself. Now it's also sometimes in my wrist, and lately behind my neck. I was laying in bed the other night and I don't know if I just worked it too much or what but it was just burning - though not really bad. It was definitely uncomfortable.

- My stool usually always comes out either soupy or flat shaped (though not completely flat).

- Weight loss started about two years ago, and has gradually gotten worse over the last six months. Albeit, I have only lost eight pounds in two years, I was already slim before so anything I lose makes me look too thin. I started out at 140 and now I'm 132. But my face looks kinda sucken in. I eat all the time, and I try to eat more just so I can retain my weight. My doctor put me on Creon three weeks ago and I've been taking it but I don't see any difference.

- Eye pain has also been a symptom of mine for a while. Like, if my stool gets really impacted, or as it seems to me, I start having this eye pain, and I've always referred to it as eye headaches, until I realized what it was coming from.

- Earlier this year I was having a lot of problems with my sugar getting low, and my family doctor told me it was hypoglycemia. After cutting out sugary drinks, and using artificial sweeteners, I no longer have such a big problem with it and that's been taken care of.

I will point out that everything seems to work fine for me. I'm still sexually active (age 33), eat fine, sleep fine, though at time I do have cloudy thinking, and I seem to be fine on many fronts. My family doctor, before sending me to my gastroenterologist, tested my blood for a lot, and everything came back normal. He also tested me for Celiac, in my blood, and took stool samples, but everything came back normal.

So, would this fall along the lines more of Celiac, Crohn's, or UC? I have no abdominal pain, or at least not yet, and i feel fine. I just want to know. Anything you guys can add would be great. Colonoscopy is on Friday and I'm very nervous about it just because I'm afraid of what it's going to be like to be knocked out with anesthesia. Thanks.

Hi SolisSpirit. I'm sorry you haven't received a reply until now :(

Have your doctors gotten to the bottom of this yet? What have they found?

Hi SolisSpirit - did you get a result? I've had very similar for about 15 years, though not quite so bad as to require Imodium. I was diagnosed with a different autoimmune disease and was taking methotrexate and steroids, and all of a sudden my bowel issues were fine. I've now stopped both of them and am having to use either codeine or Imodium to regulate. I don't want yet another set of tests and diagnosis, but I'm not too sure where untreated Crohns might lead (have had an endoscopy for celiacs as its in the family and we needed to rule it out for the other autoimmune disorder, so I know it's not that).

I did have a surgery about 20 years ago on my ileum which they had trouble explaining what the problem was - I was 16 but seem to recall they thought it was probably yersinia, though Crohns could be a slight possibility.

Any suggestions or advice would be welcome

Hi SolisSpirit
I have Coeliac disease and IBD. I was diagnosed nearly 40 yrs ago with Coeliac but only reently also IBD. Coeliac Disease is easily determined through a laparoscopy procedure as it as specific presentation and easily managed through a Gluten free diet. Small intestine heal themselves within 4-6 weeks on a GF diet. this is different to being Gluten Intolerant.
I am not sure how many people have both Coeliac and IBD - both are autoimmune disorders
