DS had a spike in his BP after his Remicade infusion two days ago (systolic went up to 152). Last night, he said he was having chest pain that felt like gas but he couldn't burp. I took his BP and it was 133/70 but he was organizing his room (moving books, vacuuming, etc.). I decided I'd take him to the ped this morning. Well, ped office decided not to open for some reason and the doc on call is NOT calling me back. DS is sleeping right now but I woke him up enough to get his BP which is 111/68 and he said his chest doesn't hurt right now. Obviously chest pain is nothing to mess around with, same with elevated BP. He's been through SO much in the last 2 months I really don't want to take him to the ER. GI's answer last night was to schedule visit this weekend with ped...well that's not an option now. Could the chest pain be from the Crohn's? Remicade infusion?

Is he having any other reaction? How long has he been taking the Remicade? If you are concerned at all, I would definitely take him to be checked out. I am not familiar with the side effects of Remicade. Prayers that it is nothing!!!

This was his third dose but GI said the high BP wouldn't be considered a side effect because it happened after the infusion.

Not sure...wish I could be more help. Is there a number you can call and talk to a representative with Remicade? (I take Humira and can call them with concerns.)

My dd had/has chest pains that come and go. Never found out what it was/is.
We found out that heat pads help a great deal.
My dd doc ordered an ekg for my dd to be sure it was alright.

You can get chest pain with "heartburn". The acid travels up the oesophogus and causes it to go into spasm. Hope that's all it is.

Thanks everyone! I called his GI and explained what was going on with his ped. He said high blood pressure could be too much fluid or may be from the Prednisone he's taking (just started to taper today to 50 mg). I'm definitely going to call my ped's office on Monday and get him in for a quick BP check and maybe an EKG if the chest pain comes back.

Good to hear you were able to speak to someone. :)

I agree with further investigation should it return. Just a couple of things to bear in mind:

- Prednisone is notorious for being harsh on the stomach and many GI’s will prescribe a PPI along with it for this very reason. So as Sascot has suggested, it may have been reflux.

- Pain very often results in an elevated blood pressure. This may explain why it was elevated when you first took it and was normal when he was resting and out of pain.

Hope all stays settled for your boy. :ghug:
