When my daughter was 27 months old, she started having chronic diarrhea. Nine months later all I know is that they told she has something called "Toddler Diarrhea". All of her stool samples (ten total) have come back negative, and her blood work was all fine. On a good day we have 3-4 diarrhea episodes, on a bad day, up to 14. She has normal development but just the last three days has started telling me her tummy hurts. Yesterday and today we have had extremely watery diarrhea, in fact, it is just water. I have Crohn's disease, my husband has IBS. The Physician told me that they do not diagnose IBS until a child is 5, and also that she is too young for Crohn's?? I was in my thirties when finally diagnosed with Crohn's. We have been through allergy testing and eliminated dairy which does not seem to be making any difference. My questions are:
1) Has anyone ever heard of "toddler diarrhea" or do they have a child with this diagnosis?
2) What have you done to alleviate symptoms? We have up to 14 stools a day.
3) Did you attempt potty training when child had chronic diarrhea?
4) Is it true that you cannot be diagnosed with IBS or Crohn's until you are 5? I have NEVER heard of this and so far have been severely disappointed in the the Children's Mercy GI Clinic in our home city. They are the "specialists" though, no other pediatric GI's in town?
