Hi guys, quick question for you..

I have an obstruction in the small intestine which often leads to extreme pain and bloating should I eat much fiber..

Due to this I stick to a low fiber diet, usually no more than 4 grams per day, the pain is greatly reduced thanks to this diet but obviously it comes with another horrid side effect.. Constipation.

I usually go once every 3 days and it leaves me feeling bloated and sometimes quite uncomfortable.. (does beat the feeling of being blocked up with an obstruction though)

Has anyone got any idea's what I can do to induce a few more bowel movements without reaching for laxatives?

Thanks guys :)

How you considered a powdered fiber supplement or polydextrose? They can provide many of the benefits of fiber without the negatives.

No, I have not, I shall look into those at once.. Thanks! :)

I'm having an op to remove the stricture in October anyway, this low fiber diet is purely to tide me over until then, a sort of long term operation prep if you will!

Check out fitness fiber by optimum nutrition.

I have adverse reactions to certain bulky fibers, but I can have over a tablespoon of this stuff without any issues. It contains polydextrose as well as many other resistant fibers, it will help regulate healthy gut bacteria as well as normalizing bowel movements. It's also very cheap.

Have a look at movicol too, it doesn't contain fibre but draws water into the stools to soften them making them easier to pass. It's not a laxative as such and can be taken for long periods without the bowel becoming dependent on it.

Hi, can you eat fruit as I found that helps loosen things up, if you can't eat fruit try fruit juices, its a natural remedy if it works.just watch out for skins on apples though, peeling them is best and chew very well. Here's hoping you sort it out soon, best wishes
