churning noises

how come i and people with ibd have so much noise in their gi track? i have swishing and gurgiling sounds in my lower left side of my colon a lot, especially when i lay down in bed and about to go to sleep. it gets even worse when i lay on my sides. why does this happen? whats it a sign of?

Good question! My gut is downright loud at times! I have some scar tissue in my small intestine where my old stoma site is. I am sure it's narrowed there. When food passes thru that spot, it sounds like it's being forced thru and is really loud, especially if I have something liquidy like soup. It sounds like gushing!

Pretty embarrasing in a meeting or quiet area, huh???

For the longest time I had symptoms just like yours. For me it felt like my stomach and abdomen were filling up like a balloon and all of a sudden it would all just release and sound like a pterodactyl or something. It was so terribly embarrassing whenever it happened while I was taking an exam or sitting in a movie theater. Turns out mine was doing it because of an intestinal blockage that was growing increasingly larger over several months. After my surgery to remove the stricture that caused the blockage, I was told that they also removed six liters of fluid that was backed up behind it! I assume this was the culprit behind my noises because ever since then it my stomach hasn't made a peep. I'm not saying you have a blockage or anything, just thought I'd share my little story.

damn i sure hope not..ive got enough to deal with. and i notice it in the lower left part of my colon. i can put my hand there when its making the noise and feel it..i wonder what it could mean

I had my operation three years ago, since then these noises are completly normal thing for me and seem to get louder the more stressed or embarrased I am. If you're worried go to your docs

I was once in a lecture at collage and the place was dead silent, and for some reason the lecturer stopped talking and my stomach decided to make THE loudest sounds ever -_-

Lol.. Sorry dont mean to laugh but I'm so glad I'm not the only person being embarrass by this.. I was taking a test and It was sooo quiet and all I heard was GURGLE.. I mean it was so loud and embarrassing.. Even now I'm scared to go in quiet places.. When I know it's about to happen I try to make noise with my throat or play I drop something so I can make some kind of noise to block the tummy noise..

Yeah, I have the symphony of gastric sounds, as well. Some sounds like fingersnails along a chalk board or others deep and billowing like the echos from a cave or something. I could go on, lol...

I actually have been struggling with a partial blockage and are probably going to be discussing surgery again very soon (GI upped my Humira for a month to see if it might help in some way).

Since being diagnosed with this partial blockage, my guts have gone on a loud party kick. Every night just after we climb into bed it's a symphony of sloshing, gurgles and crashes. The longer it goes since I was diagnosed with the partial blockage, the louder things get in there. I've been dealing with Crohn's for a long time, but this is the first time my insides have been this crazy loud.

most of you guys are saying blockage..i had a scope literally a month or two ago. could i have developed one that soon?

I used to have that really bad. I stopped eating ice cream every night and the noises were cut down by 80 percent.

I would also vote for a narrowing of the bowel. I had many strictures with mine and lots and lots of noise. You could also watch as bubbles would move through. Looked like the "Alien" was about to be born! Disappeared when my strictures were removed. If you don't have scar tissue formed, some bowel rest may take care of the issue for you.

Alien, yes exactly.

Gosh my stomach makes unnaturally loud noises. Sometimes I find moving around or gentle twisting (like yoga) helps with the churning side.
As I have malabsorption issues, I find the serious churns happen when my gut is swollen and its basically trying to move material through the narrower space. For me, as long as I go back to my proper foods, it resolves itself in 24hours. At least output is constant :D

The funniest is when I drink water on an empty stomach and I literally hear it gurgle the whole way down. Its quite entertaining!

Oh my digestive system makes a lively variety of noises. Anything from a sounds like a home water jug system dispensing water to small growling (even if I'm not hungry).

I wish it would stop. Rather awkward. One meeting a month or so ago it decided to act up. No one pointed it out but they glanced and I was so very embarrassed.
