So frustrated...everything has been going well until my son developed a red, warm to the touch inflammation on his jawline. Thought it was dental so took him in for x-rays, nothing to do with his teeth. No fever, no signs of a viral infection.

Dentist thinks it could be his lymph nodes due to the immune suppression of the prednisone and 6MP. We are tapered done to 5mg of Prednisone for just 2 more days. Dentist called our GI doc and she agreed to put him on Clindamycin and see him in a few days.

So worried about the "unknown infection" and the antibiotic causing a potential flare. We have added a probiotic to his daily pill intake.

Seeing a Rheumatologist today for muscle aches (maybe due to Pentasa) and GI tomorrow. Any insight/thoughts?

Can the dentist or doctor tell you what they are treating? Lymphadenitis (infection of a lymph node) causes redness and pain overlying the area but one would expect to feel a lymph node or group of nodes. There are lymph nodes below the jaw. (Heres a drawing of what cervical lymphadenitis could look like http://www.netterimages.com/image/57717.htm)

Has your son visited his pediatrician? If you have a good pediatrician, I would ask him/her to take a look and give input.

Turned out to be something called Panniculitus, due to being outside in the cold and sledding and causing trauma to his face, which was already swollen from the Prednisone. Unfortunately, we were overnight in the hospital, CT scan, and saw a bunch of specialists, but his very intelligent GI doc figured it out in 2 minutes of seeing him! She is the best!!!!
