Hi,

I've started Azathioprine 3 weeks ago, I can only take 50mg due to low TPMT. 3 weeks in and I've got a urinary tract infection :-( I was prescribed cefalexin on Monday which gave me gut pain and bloating within 90 mins, I carried on for 2 days but had terrible diahorrea. I went back to my gp yesterday and he swapped for co - amoxyclav. I've no longer got the gut pain but still got horrendous diahorrea. I'm so fed up, I had just started to have 'semi solid' stools before this after 7 months of continuous diahorrea. I want to stop taking the antibiotics, but I've still got another 6 days of antibiotics to take. Ive been off work sick for the last 2 days too. Has anyone got experience of taking these anti biotics and how long did their diahorrea last? Are there any anti biotics that don't cause diahorrea? Thanks for any advice.

I am sorry you are encountering the side effects... As if IBD wasn't enough..
Personally I do well on amoxyclav but I think a lot has to do with the fact my colon's gone, it can't really affect my bacterial equilibrium out there... I think I would talk with your pharmacist to get you some adequate probiotics along with your antibiotic, it can help lessen the digestive side-effects. I would definitively talk with a pharmacist about stopping these antibiotics, you would not want your bacteria to built up tolerance against it. The 7 day course is generally the minimal length to insure avoiding that. The only antiobiotic that I can think of that could maybe be better on the diarrhea aspect is ciproflaxone. May that could be an option.

I've passed a lot of blood this afternoon and got back in touch with my gp. He's taken me off the anti biotics and given my some oral rehydration sachets and advised no food and only clear liquids for 24 hours. I'm so fed up of this disease :-( he said the same as you, basically all the good gut bacteria will have been killed which has contributed to the anti biotic induced diahorrea. I will start on my probiotics again on Saturday- thanks.

I feel you! I don't tolerate augmentin at all -- it gives me room-clearing stinky farts! I would definitely recommend pro-biotics while you take it, and then for another 30 days after to re-establish your flora. :)

Sooo annoying to deal with all that :( I hope this get better for you soon. None of us need their situation aggravated by other medication...
