Is anyone else dealing with going to college and having Crohn's? It can be quite troublesome with infusion and numerous doctors visits, when your doctor is two hour away.

Hi, Kingston!

I'm currently in college as well, and I know quite a few other members are too.

Is it possible to find a doctor closer to you, or at least set up your infusions somewhere closer? Two hours sounds pretty inconvenient. :(

Hello, I went through uni with crohn's and since I graduated I have found it hard to find work.
When they first suggested infliximab to me I asked if I could wait until after uni, it was only a couple of months. Because for me as well it would have been hours away.
I have only just started now a year later. :/
If you could have them closer to you that would be great! :)
Good luck with your studies.

Hi Kingston!

I was given a choice of having the infusions on the humira injections. My nurse told me they were kind of the same thing but one was a long infusion and the other was just a quick ***. I chose the injections because I have a 4 year old daughter and I work so staying in the hospital for hours at a time just isn't practical for me.

has this option been discussed with you or is there no choice?

It's awful reading people's stories on here and seeing how much this affects our lives. I hope something more convenient can be sorted out for you
xxxxxx

Unfortunately the only way to get the infusions done by me, would be to go through another GI doctor here, and my insurance policy won't cover it :( also the worst part about being on infliximab is making sure I chose a profession with good healthcare coverage. So I guess I can't do the whole starving artist thing hahaha. It's crazy to hear everyone's stories, I don't feel like any of my close friends truly understand how frustrating this disease is but this site has really opened my eyes to the fact that I am not alone!

I wouldnt swap to the injections just for the convenience, you can build antibodies to the medications and you'd kick yourself if changing caused that.

Im at college too. I moved abroad, luckily with my parents so I don't have some daily stresses but I have a whole bunch of others instead.
When I lived in the UK I dropped out of university because of my health mainly, so my best advice is make sure you register at the disability office and make the most of what you're entitled to!

I find it hard and stressful I also find not many understand, my parents especially I often get the "everyone else in college can hold down a a part time job and study! Why can you just make a bit more of an effort" an then I try to explain those are the people who stay up all night cramming before exams n writing papers at 4am my body would have me hospitalized immediately of I even thought that was an option lol

Good luck finding a solution, discuss it with ur insurance n your school you keep nagging n you may get somewhere!

We should def have a college support thread just to keep us all motivated! I find that the hardest when I know I have so far to go before I can get a job that will cover my health care costs!

Have you called the insurance company to discuss this with them? In situations like this, being a little pushy with them can sometimes make the difference.

Are you certain the college health center couldn't do the infusions, as NGNG suggested? Once again, it may be an issue of just making some calls.

Where are you located, Kingston?
