Colonoscopy/Endoscopy and late period?

Hi All,

I am very new to this forum. Currently undiagnosed, but GI says symptoms are making him think I have Crohn's.

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy on Monday. I should have started my period yesterday (Tuesday). I currently use the NuvaRing for birth control. I have tracked my monthly cycle for over 4 years now and am never late, not even a day or two. I am lucky to have very consistent and regular periods.

I am now almost two days late. Could the colonscopy have caused this? I know that I am not pregnant because my husband and I have not had sex since my last period because of the severity of my symptoms :(
(Severe abdominal pain, cramping, 7+ days of constipation followed by violent diarrhea, bloating, fever/chills during cramping, mouth sores, extreme fatigue, weight loss)

Stress hasn't typically messed with my period. I went through law school and am now an attorney which can be stressful at times, but my period is always on time and consistent.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! I am new to all this, hoping to find answers and feel better.

Hi there, sorry to hear you're suffering. I don't know about the colonoscopy but if you have lost a lot of weight and have become malnourished your body might be stopping the bleed to save the energy?

I've heard of this in anorexia etc so could be a possibility. Hope you get some answers soon!

That's a great point! My most-recent blood work showed severe B12 and vitamin D deficiencies, as well as less severe deficiencies with other vitamins. That could be why.

Thanks for the input!

I agree with what Soph said about weight loss - I lost 17 lbs in about a month last July/August during a very bad flare, and even though I (just barely) still fell within the healthy weight range for my height, I basically didn't have a period that month (my body tried, there was a tiny bit of bloody discharge one afternoon, but that was it). I was hospitalized for that flare and put on steroids and a liquid diet and I slowly started healing and regaining my weight, and then I had a much more normal period the following month. So presumably once you get at least the deficiencies more under control, your cycle will hopefully normalize again.
